About Scissor Sisters

Scissor Sisters is an American pop rock band formed in 2000 in New York City. The group’s core members are Jake Shears (vocals), Babydaddy (various instruments), and Del Marquis (guitar and bass). Former members include Ana Matronic (vocals) and Paddy Boom (drums). The band’s music incorporates elements of pop rock, glam rock, nu-disco, and electroclash. The name “Scissor Sisters” was derived from a slang term referencing tribadism. The band first gained attention with a disco-oriented cover of “Comfortably Numb,” originally by Pink Floyd, which became popular in dance clubs and achieved chart success in the United Kingdom. Their self-titled debut album “Scissor Sisters” (2004) reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and became the best-selling album in the UK that year. It was later certified nine-times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. The album produced several UK top 20 singles, including “Take Your Mama,” “Laura,” “Mary,” and “Filthy/Gorgeous,” the latter also reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Despite this success abroad, the album achieved more limited commercial results in the United States. The second studio album, “Ta-Dah” (2006), also reached number one in the UK and included the single “I Don’t Feel Like Dancin’,” which became the band’s first UK number one single and their most commercially successful track. Their third album, “Night Work” (2010), featured a more club-oriented sound and reached number two on the UK Albums Chart and number one on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart. The fourth album, “Magic Hour” (2012), continued in a dance-pop direction and achieved top 10 chart positions in several countries. Scissor Sisters became known for their theatrical and often provocative live performances, as well as for collaborations with artists such as Elton John and Kylie Minogue. The band also participated in various charitable and environmental initiatives. The group originated when Jake Shears and Babydaddy began collaborating after moving to New York City. They initially performed in underground clubs and were later joined by Ana Matronic, Del Marquis, and Paddy Boom. Early releases included the single “Electrobix” and the cover “Comfortably Numb,” which helped attract attention from UK record labels and led to a recording contract with Polydor Records. Following the success of their debut album, the band toured extensively and released “Ta-Dah,” which further established their popularity, particularly in Europe. During this period, they performed at major festivals and events and collaborated with various artists. Subsequent touring and recording activities led to the release of “Night Work,” after earlier material for a third album had been abandoned. In 2012, the band released “Magic Hour” and embarked on a world tour. Later that year, they announced an indefinite hiatus. Although members indicated the group had not formally disbanded, they remained inactive for several years. In 2017, they released the charity single “Swerlk.” In 2024, the band announced a reunion for a series of performances in 2025 to mark the twentieth anniversary of their debut album. The reunited line-up consisted of Shears, Babydaddy, and Del Marquis, without Ana Matronic or Paddy Boom. The band subsequently performed live shows, including an appearance at the 2025 Glastonbury Festival.
