About GALLIANO

Galliano are a London-based acid jazz group that was originally active between 1988 and 1997. The group was among the first acts to record for Eddie Piller and Gilles Peterson's Acid Jazz record label and was also the first signing to Peterson's Talkin' Loud label. The original lineup included Robert Gallagher on vocals, credited as Roberto Galliano, along with Constantine Weir on vocals and Crispin Robinson on percussion. Their early work incorporated spoken-word elements influenced by groups such as the Last Poets. Michael Snaith, known as The Vibe Controller, later joined as the group expanded into a touring band for their debut album. Their first album, "In Pursuit of the 13th Note", was released in 1991 on Talkin' Loud and was produced by Chris Bangs. The album featured contributions from Roy Ayers and received an Edison Pop Award in 1992. Their second album, "A Joyful Noise Unto the Creator", was released in 1992. After an early tour of Japan, the band developed a more stable lineup that included Valerie Etienne on vocals, Mick Talbot on keyboards, Crispin Taylor on drums, Ernie McKone on bass guitar, Mark Vandergucht on guitar, and Steve Ameedee, also known as Uncle Big Man, as a dancer. Ski Oakenfull later replaced Mick Talbot on keyboards in 1994. Galliano achieved their greatest commercial success with the album "The Plot Thickens", released in 1994, which reached number eight on the UK Albums Chart. The album produced two UK top 40 singles: "Long Time Gone", a cover of a David Crosby song, and "Twyford Down", which referenced protests against road construction at Twyford Down. The band performed at major festivals during this period, including Glastonbury Festival. Their fourth studio album, ":4", was released in 1996. It included the track "Slack Hands", which was used in the title sequence of the 1997 film "One Eight Seven". The group disbanded in November 1997 following a final performance at Dingwalls in London. After the split, members pursued various projects, including Two Banks of Four, Earl Zinger, William Anderson, and The Diabolical Liberties. In 2023, Galliano announced a reunion and returned to live performance, including appearances at Gilles Peterson's We Out Here Festival. In 2024, they released new singles including "Circles Going Round The Sun" and "Pleasure, Joy & Happiness". Their fifth studio album, "Halfway Somewhere", was released on 30 August 2024, marking their first album in 28 years.
