About Tina TURNER

Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock; November 26, 1939 – May 24, 2023) was a singer, songwriter, actress, and author. Often referred to as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll", she became one of the most prominent figures in popular music and is regarded as one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated sales exceeding 100 million records worldwide. She was known for her powerful vocals, energetic stage performances, and influence on rock and popular music. Turner first gained prominence in the 1960s as the lead vocalist of the duo Ike & Tina Turner, performing alongside Ike Turner and supported by the Ikettes and the Kings of Rhythm. The group became known for their energetic live performances and successful recordings. In the 1970s, Turner ended both her personal and professional relationship with Ike Turner after years of marital abuse and began pursuing a solo career. Her international solo success began with the 1983 hit "Let's Stay Together". She achieved a major commercial comeback with her fifth solo album "Private Dancer" (1984), which became a multi-platinum release. The album included the single "What's Love Got to Do with It", which won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and became Turner’s only number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100. Other successful singles during this period included "Better Be Good to Me", "Private Dancer", "We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)", "Typical Male", and "I Don't Wanna Fight". Turner was also a successful touring artist. Her "Break Every Rule World Tour" became the highest-grossing tour by a female artist of the 1980s and set a Guinness World Record for the largest paying audience at a concert at the time, with approximately 180,000 attendees. Her later tours included the "Wildest Dreams Tour", which became the first tour by a female artist to earn more than $100 million, and the "Twenty Four Seven Tour", the highest-grossing tour of 2000. She retired from performing in 2009 after completing the "Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour". In addition to her music career, Turner appeared in several films, including "Tommy" (1975), "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985), and "Last Action Hero" (1993). Her life story was portrayed in the biographical film "What's Love Got to Do with It" (1993), which was based on her autobiography "I, Tina: My Life Story" (1986). Her career also inspired the jukebox musical "Tina" (2018) and the documentary film "Tina" (2021). Turner received numerous awards and honors during her career, including 12 Grammy Awards, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and three inductions into the Grammy Hall of Fame. She was ranked among the greatest artists and singers in several industry lists and became the first Black artist and first woman to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. She also became the first Black female artist to win an MTV Award. Turner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Ike Turner in 1991, and again as a solo artist in 2021. In 2005, she received the Kennedy Center Honors. In 2013, Turner renounced her United States citizenship and became a citizen of Switzerland. She lived there until her death in Küsnacht in 2023.
