About Rush

Rush is a Canadian rock band formed in Toronto in 1968. The original lineup consisted of guitarist Alex Lifeson, drummer John Rutsey, and bassist and vocalist Jeff Jones, who was soon replaced by Geddy Lee. Over the next six years, the band underwent several lineup changes before establishing its classic power trio with the addition of Neil Peart in July 1974, replacing Rutsey shortly after the release of their self-titled debut album. This lineup of Lifeson, Lee, and Peart remained stable until 2015, when Peart retired from music. The band disbanded after Peart’s death in 2020, though Lifeson and Lee occasionally collaborated afterward. In October 2025, Lifeson and Lee announced a reunion tour in 2026, with Anika Nilles filling in for Peart. Rush is known for its virtuosic musicianship, complex compositions, and lyrical themes drawn from science fiction, fantasy, and philosophy. Their musical style evolved from blues-inspired hard rock to progressive rock, then to a synthesizer-heavy sound in the 1980s, before returning to guitar-driven rock later in their career. The members are widely recognized for their technical skill, with each winning multiple awards in magazine readers’ polls over the years. As of 2024, Rush ranks 90th in the United States with sales of 26 million albums, and their total worldwide sales are estimated at over 42 million. The band has received 14 platinum and three multi-platinum albums in the U.S., and 17 platinum albums in Canada. They have been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, won ten Juno Awards, and received an International Achievement Award at the 2009 SOCAN Awards. Rush was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. They are regarded by critics as one of the greatest rock bands of all time.
