Paso Doble is a band associated with the Neue Deutsche Welle movement, founded in 1983 by composer, music producer, and keyboardist Frank Oberpichler, born Hieber (born May 9, 1957, in Paderborn), and singer Rale Oberpichler (born December 14, 1952, in Pinneberg). The musical duo is named after the Spanish-Latin American dance paso doble (English: "double step"). After participating in and producing several musical projects during the Neue Deutsche Welle period, they became known under the name Paso Doble with their own hit songs "Computerliebe" and "Herz an Herz." Before founding the band, Rale Oberpichler worked as a background singer, including for Udo Lindenberg and Marius Müller-Westernhagen, and had collaborated successfully with Rolf Zuckowski. She portrayed the bird mother in his "Vogelhochzeit" (1977). Frank Hieber had already achieved success as a producer and composer; the track "Major Tom (völlig losgelöst)", recorded with Peter Schilling, reached number one on the German singles chart for eight weeks in 1983 and was the best-selling single of the year. Paso Doble's first single, "Computerliebe", remained in the German Top 20 for several weeks in 1985, at a time when the Neue Deutsche Welle had already begun to fade. The subsequent album and its title track "Fantasie" failed to replicate that success, as did the single "Herz an Herz", although it still managed to chart in the lower rankings. In the following year, the band received the Goldene Stimmgabel award and won in the ZDF-Hitparade. Paso Doble were among the few artists who incorporated elaborate choreography into their performances. Frank Hieber (now Oberpichler) later returned to work as a producer, collaborating with artists such as Juliane Werding, Rolf Zuckowski, Stefan Waggershausen, Rio Reiser, and Blümchen. In 1996, Blümchen’s cover version of "Herz an Herz" reached number four on the German charts, stayed in the Top Ten for seven weeks, and was certified gold. In the 1990s, Rale created a series of musical fairy tales in collaboration with Rolf Zuckowski. In 1995, the chorus of the song "Computerliebe" was covered by the dance band Das Modul and reentered the German Top Ten. Following that, the single "Allein im All" was produced in cooperation with producer Felix Gauder. Starting in 2004, Paso Doble resumed more frequent live performances and released the single "Message Angekommen" in 2005. In 2006, they released "Versunkener Schatz", their second previously unreleased album, which included the songs "Herz an Herz" and "Magische Nacht". In 2008, the band released another album, "Hautnah", which featured several remakes and live versions of older tracks. In 2012, the anniversary album "30 Jahre NDW" was released to commemorate the Neue Deutsche Welle, featuring numerous cover versions of Paso Doble classics. The band participated in the production of several of the tracks. Following that, they embarked on a chamber musical tour where they performed their synthesizer-based songs in a classical duo format. Rale Oberpichler sang, while Frank Oberpichler provided piano accompaniment. Recordings of these performances were made available on the band’s official YouTube channel. Toward the end of the decade, Paso Doble collaborated with music producer DJKC (Kai Soffel). In 2020, they released two singles, "Kleine Killer 2020" and the pre-Christmas track "Season Song (zünd dein Licht an)". In 2021, they released the new album "Urknall", also produced with DJKC. On March 15, 2024, Paso Doble released an English-language version of "Computerliebe", titled "Computerlove", on their YouTube channel.
