About Erik Marchand et les Balkaniks

When clarinet, trumpet, bombard and Breton violin are mixed with brass, accordions, cymbalum, double bass of the Gypsies, Romanians, Serbians and Turkish... When Fado meets the Turkish gypsy music and the accordion reminds us the family ties between Breton Dañs Taro and Serbian Kolo... We are plunged into musical universe of Erik Marchand and his Breton and Eastern Europe friends. Pruna is the fruit of a 10 year old collaboration between Erik Marchand- famous Kan ha Diskan singer and Breton clarinet player- with Caransebes Taraf, around writing and interpretation of a cross border music, supplemented by years of Rumanian popular music studies. This creation was also born from 20 years of passion for the Serbian music, as well as attentive approach of the Eastern music systems and modal world Makam. The specific orientation of this work is to use the harmonic force and the virtuosity of the Rumanian and Serb Bănăt music, for Oriental or Breton modal improvisations, built from traditional topics. The texts reminds us the universe of "fou d' Elsa d' Aragon". Gwerz (Breton song) speaks about love; Brâu (drum with internal friction, of the name of the bull in Occitan and whose sound evokes this animal) is played like for a wedding. Serbian Kolo recalls the war. A movement at three then five times, we travel from Portugal towards Romania while passing by Brittany, Turkey and Serbia. Whatever the culture: traditions and innovations are compatible.
