About Ehud Asherie
Ehud Asherie was born in Israel in 1979. He lived in Italy for six years before moving with his family to New York at the age of nine. As a child, he took piano lessons, but his real interest in playing began when, at fourteen, he discovered Smalls jazz club in Greenwich Village. On weekends, he would stay at the club from ten at night to six in the morning, listening to the headliners and playing in the late-night jam sessions. Ehud studied with the late Frank Hewitt, an influential pianist he met at Smalls. Soon, he was performing with other Small regulars, including the late Jimmy Lovelace. At the same time, he began leading the jam sessions on Sunday nights. Ehud was first featured at Smalls in 1999, initially with the Grant Stewart quartet and then as a headliner with his own trio. Shortly thereafter, he started a two-year engagement at the Rainbow Room, where he played six nights a week with his Trio 65. Ehud has performed with such jazz notables as Harry Allen, Peter Bernstein, Joe Cohn, Eric Alexander, Ryan Kisor, Jesse Davis, Clark Terry, Roy Ayers, Bobby Durham, Jane Monheit and Bob Mover. He has toured across the world, appearing at clubs and festivals in Brazil, England, Italy, Serbia, Slovenia and South Korea. Ehud continues to be a regular at Smalls and other clubs in New York such as Smoke, Fat Cat, St. Nick’s Pub and the Blue Note. Ehud’s first CD as leader was Trio65, released by NuJazzCity in 2001. This recording includes bass player Joseph Lepore and drummer Tommaso Cappellato and features the music of Billy Strayhorn. Since then Ehud has recorded two CDs with Grant Stewart, Tenor and Soul and Estate, released by Video Arts Music. Recently, Ehud has been collaborating with the Brazilian guitarist Vinício "Bina" Coquet. Their first CD together, Samba de Gringo (Urban Jungle Records), is a collection of original compositions and Brazilian tunes with Ehud playing the Hammond B3 organ. A second CD will be released in 2007. Ehud’s current project as leader is a CD of original music and jazz standards for the Posi-Tone label.
