About Damn Yankees
Damn Yankees were an American rock supergroup formed in New York City in 1989. The band consisted of singer and guitarist Tommy Shaw of Styx, singer and bassist Jack Blades of Night Ranger, guitarist Ted Nugent of the Amboy Dukes, and drummer Michael Cartellone, who later joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. The group is known for the songs "High Enough" and "Where You Goin' Now," both of which reached the Top 40 in the early 1990s. In the late 1980s, several rock supergroups were formed in the United States, including Bad English, Mr. Big, and Badlands. Damn Yankees was assembled by producer John Kalodner in 1989, bringing together Shaw, Blades, and Nugent after the original bands of its members experienced declining commercial success. Their self-titled debut album, produced by Ron Nevison, was released in 1990 and was certified double-platinum in 1994. The single "Coming of Age," written by Blades, reached number 60 on the U.S. Hot 100 and number 1 on the AOR charts, while "Come Again," written by Shaw, received extensive AOR airplay. "High Enough" became the band's most successful single, reaching number 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and number 2 on the AOR charts in early 1991. Damn Yankees also contributed songs to the soundtracks of films such as "Gremlins 2: The New Batch," "Nothing But Trouble," and "The Taking of Beverly Hills." Following their debut, the band toured internationally alongside a revamped Bad Company, Poison, and Jackyl. Their U.S. tour coincided with the Persian Gulf War, during which the band displayed American flags and made statements supporting the military. In 1992, their second album, "Don't Tread," was released and certified gold. The title track was included in the "Barcelona Gold" album in connection with the Barcelona Olympic Games. The album produced singles including "Mister Please," "Where You Goin' Now," and "The Silence Is Broken," the latter of which appeared in the 1993 film "Nowhere to Run." After 1994, changes at Warner Bros. Records led to the band receiving financial compensation not to record a new album. Nugent resumed his solo career, while Shaw and Blades formed the duo Shaw Blades. Their album "Hallucination" was released in 1995 with limited label support and included the single "I'll Always Be with You," which received some AOR airplay. Shaw Blades later released the album "Influence" in 2007, featuring covers of songs that had influenced them. Both artists continued to record and perform with their original bands. Damn Yankees reunited for occasional performances, including a 2004 appearance at Alice Cooper's Christmas Pudding charity concert and a 2010 performance at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California. Nugent collaborated with Night Ranger in 2011 on an extended version of "Coming of Age," and Cartellone performed with Night Ranger in 2017 at the Wildflower Festival in Texas. The band members have continued to meet and write together, keeping the possibility of a reunion and new material open, although no new album has been released.
