About Angela Bofill

Angela Tomasa Bofill (May 2, 1954 – June 13, 2024) was an American singer, songwriter, and composer. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, to a Cuban father and a Puerto Rican mother, she was raised in The Bronx and exposed to Latin music as well as American performers. Bofill studied classical music and sang in New York City's All City Chorus before attending Hunter College High School, graduating in 1972, and later earning a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 1976. Bofill began performing professionally as a teenager with Ricardo Marrero & the Group and the Dance Theater of Harlem chorus. She was introduced to Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen of GRP Records by flautist Dave Valentin and released her debut album "Angie" in 1978, featuring the single "This Time I'll Be Sweeter" and the jazz composition "Under the Moon and Over the Sky". Her second album, "Angel of the Night" (1979), included the singles "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and "I Try". These releases established her as one of the first Latina singers to achieve success in R&B and jazz markets. Bofill performed at Avery Fisher Hall for the Newport Jazz Festival in 1980 with a 9-piece band and a 24-voice choir. She later moved to Arista Records, releasing "Something About You" (1981) and "Too Tough" (1982), the latter producing the R&B hit "Tonight I Give In". Her final collaboration with producer Narada Michael Walden, "Teaser", included the Top 20 R&B single "I'm On Your Side", later covered by Jennifer Holliday. In the mid-1980s, Bofill recorded additional albums with Arista and later signed with Capitol Records for "Intuition" (1988), which included a cover of Gino Vannelli's "I Just Wanna Stop" reaching number 11 on the R&B chart. She continued releasing albums over the next decade and contributed backing vocals for Diana Ross, Kirk Whalum, and Norman Connors. Bofill performed internationally and appeared in stage productions including "God Don't Like Ugly" and "What a Man Wants, What a Man Needs". After suffering strokes in 2006 and 2007 that impaired her speech and mobility, Bofill returned to performing through "The Angela Bofill Experience", featuring guest artists performing her songs. She was profiled in the TVOne documentary series "Unsung" in 2012 and was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2023. Bofill was married to Richard Vincent from 1984 to 1994, and they had a daughter, Shauna, born in 1984. She died on June 13, 2024, at her daughter's home in Vallejo, California. Her funeral mass was held on June 28, 2024, at St. Dominic's Catholic Church in Benicia, California.
