About Freddie Jackson

Frederick Anthony Jackson (born 2 October 1956) is an American R&B singer. He began his professional music career in the late 1970s with the California funk band Mystic Merlin. Among his best-known songs are "Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake)", "Have You Ever Loved Somebody", "Jam Tonight", "Do Me Again" and "You Are My Lady". He also contributed the duet "Love Survives", with Irene Cara, to the soundtrack of the film "All Dogs Go to Heaven", and appeared in the film "King of New York". Jackson was born in the Harlem area of New York City and was trained as a gospel singer from an early age, performing at the White Rock Baptist Church of Harlem. There he met Paul Laurence, who later became his producer and songwriting partner. After completing his education, he joined Laurence’s group LJE (Laurence Jones Ensemble) and performed on the New York nightclub circuit. In the late 1970s, he moved to the West Coast, where he became the lead singer of Mystic Merlin, recording three studio albums with the group between 1980 and 1982, before returning to New York to work with Laurence at Hush Productions. Jackson worked as a demo singer for Laurence’s compositions and as a backing vocalist for Melba Moore before securing a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1984. His debut album, "Rock Me Tonight", was released in 1985. Its title track reached number one on the R&B chart, as did "You Are My Lady", while additional singles from the album also reached the R&B top ten. The album topped the R&B album chart and was certified platinum. His second album, "Just Like the First Time", released in 1986, continued this commercial success, producing several R&B number-one singles, including "Tasty Love", "Have You Ever Loved Somebody" and "Jam Tonight". His subsequent album, "Don't Let Love Slip Away" (1988), included further R&B chart-topping singles, while "Do Me Again" (1990) also produced number-one R&B hits, including its title track and "Love Me Down". Despite continued success on the R&B charts, his presence on the wider pop charts declined during this period. Some commentators noted stylistic similarities across his releases. In 1989, Jackson appeared in an episode of the television series "The Golden Girls" and performed the song "It's a Small World". That same year, he recorded "Love Survives" with Irene Cara for "All Dogs Go to Heaven". In 1993, Jackson left Capitol Records and signed with RCA Records. His first release for the label, "Here It Is" (1994), achieved more modest commercial results. He subsequently released "Private Party" (1995) and, after a period of reduced activity, "Life After 30" (1999) and "Live in Concert" (2000). He returned to the charts with "It's Your Move" (2004) and released "Transitions" (2006). In 2010, he issued "For You", which included the single "I Don't Wanna Go". In 2014, Jackson released the single "Love & Satisfaction" and undertook international touring. He later performed alongside artists including Jeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Melba Moore and Stephanie Mills. In 2017, he released the single "One Night" from the album "Love Signals", which reached number one on an internet radio soul chart and also charted on independent R&B and soul listings. In 2019, he released the single "A Million Ways" and was announced as a headlining performer at the African World Festival. A fictional piece titled "Arizona", written by John Edgar Wideman and published in The New Yorker in November 2019, is presented in the form of a letter addressed to Jackson.
