About Tigermoth

1) Producer from Melbourne Australia 1) Instrumentalist and turntablist Tigermoth’s tracks are eerily nocturnal instrumentals that brood and hypnotise with their druggily downtempo beats. They evoke feelings that are strangely specific, as if each of the tracks is its own street in a different city. According to Tigermoth, the feeling of a sense of place is definitely an influence on him. Place and time. much of his influence comes from having lived in Japan. Plenty of record stores there, which was ideal for chasing samples and finding good beats to influence. His album Underwater Beats started during an 18-month sojourn in Japan and was finished on his return to Australia. He says that without that trip to inspire him, he never would have conceived an album like this. “It gave me everything that I had been looking for. Jazz is huge there, dub is huge, as much as hip hop and hip hop can be very experimental to more traditional-styled hip hop. But there if it is good, it is celebrated. And because of their language barrier turntablism became equally as big as MCing, which is a little different from the rest of the world. Seeing people like DJ Krush and DJ Baku up close at gigs was mind-blowing and totally inspiring. Going to jams where there were eight MPCs and everyone playing their beats to one another and seeing that hip hop could be abstract, tribal and progressive and still bang large. Everything I had been looking for found it’s way to me when I was there. No way could it have happened if I had stayed in Australia.” As well as Japanese masters like DJ Krush, Tigermoth cites Public Enemy and the Bomb Squad’s production style, all paranoid bass and urgent steam-whistles, as a strong influence on the Tigermoth sound. http://tigermoth.bandcamp.com/.
