Sum 41 was a Canadian rock band formed in Ajax, Ontario, in 1996. The final line-up consisted of Deryck Whibley, Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker and Frank Zummo. The band signed an international recording contract with Island Records in 1999 and released their debut extended play "Half Hour of Power" in 2000. Their first studio album, "All Killer No Filler", followed in 2001 and achieved mainstream success, particularly through the single "Fat Lip", which reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Subsequent singles "In Too Deep" and "Motivation" also performed well commercially. The album was certified platinum in the United States and the United Kingdom, and triple platinum in Canada. Their second album, "Does This Look Infected?" (2002), continued their commercial success and featured the singles "Still Waiting" and "The Hell Song". In 2004, the band released "Chuck", which reached the top ten of the Billboard 200 and included the singles "We're All to Blame" and "Pieces". The following album, "Underclass Hero" (2007), received a mixed critical response but became their highest-charting release in the United States at the time. "Screaming Bloody Murder" (2011) was met with a similarly mixed reception and achieved lower commercial performance compared to earlier releases. The band returned with "13 Voices" in 2016, released through Hopeless Records, and later received a double gold certification from IMPALA for European sales. Their seventh studio album, "Order in Decline", was issued in 2019. Their eighth and final studio album, "Heaven :x: Hell", was released on 29 March 2024 through Rise Records. Sum 41 disbanded in March 2025 following a final world tour and their induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Throughout their career, the band toured extensively and were nominated for seven Juno Awards, winning Group of the Year in 2003 and Rock Album of the Year for "Chuck" in 2005. They were also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance for the song "Blood in My Eyes". By 2016, they ranked among the best-selling Canadian artists in Canada. Sum 41 originated from an earlier band named Kaspir, formed in 1994 by Whibley and Grant McVittie. Influenced initially by alternative rock bands such as Weezer and Nirvana, the group later shifted towards a punk-influenced sound, prompting the formation of a new band under the name Sum 41 in 1996. Early line-ups included Whibley, Steve Jocz, McVittie and Jon Marshall, with later additions including Dave Baksh and Jason McCaslin. The band’s name was derived from the number of days between the beginning of their summer holiday and a Warped Tour performance. After signing with Island Records, the band recorded new material between 1999 and 2000, leading to the release of "Half Hour of Power". Their breakthrough came with "All Killer No Filler", which was supported by extensive touring and high-profile appearances, including participation in the Vans Warped Tour. The band followed this with "Does This Look Infected?", which featured a heavier sound and more serious lyrical themes. In 2004, the band travelled to the Democratic Republic of the Congo with War Child Canada to document the effects of civil conflict. During their stay, fighting resumed in the region, and the group were evacuated by United Nations peacekeepers. In recognition of one of the officers involved, they titled their next album "Chuck". A documentary of the experience, "Rocked: Sum 41 in Congo", was later released. Dave Baksh departed the band in 2006 citing creative differences, and Tom Thacker subsequently joined, initially as a touring guitarist before becoming a full member. The band released "Underclass Hero" in 2007 and continued touring, although some performances were cancelled due to injury. A compilation album, "All the Good Shit", was released in 2009. Thacker became an official member during the recording of "Screaming Bloody Murder". The album’s release was followed by further touring, though some dates were postponed due to Whibley’s health issues. In 2013, drummer Steve Jocz left the band, leaving Whibley as the sole remaining founding member. In 2014, Whibley disclosed serious health problems related to alcohol use but later resumed work on new material. In 2015, Dave Baksh rejoined the band and Frank Zummo was introduced as drummer. This line-up recorded "13 Voices", marking a return after a period of inactivity. The band toured extensively in support of the album and continued with anniversary tours and co-headlining performances. "Order in Decline" was released in 2019 and supported by multiple singles, including "Out for Blood" and "Never There". The band maintained an active touring schedule until the early 2020s. In 2022, they announced the double album "Heaven :x: Hell", intended to reflect both their earlier pop-punk style and later heavier sound. The band announced their planned disbandment in 2023, ahead of the album’s release and a final tour. The album produced several singles, including "Landmines", "Rise Up" and "Waiting on a Twist of Fate". Their final performance took place in January 2025. Shortly afterwards, they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Their final releases included a cover of "Sleep Now in the Fire" and the single "Radio Silence".
