About Spliff

There are several bands that have used the name Spliff. 1. Spliff was a German band active from 1980 to 1985. Their musical style combined elements of rock, funk, and electronic music, with the keyboard work of Reinhold Heil and, in later years, the use of electronic drums such as the Simmons SDS-V contributing significantly to their sound. The group’s origins trace back to the band Lokomotive Kreuzberg, where Herwig Mitteregger, Bernhard Potschka, and Manfred Praeker first played together. Along with Reinhold Heil, who had previously been active in the jazz group Bakmak, they later collaborated with Nina Hagen as the Nina Hagen Band, releasing two albums. Following their separation from Nina Hagen, the four musicians formed a new project at the suggestion of manager Jim Rakete. Together with singer Alf Klimek, also known as “Klimax”, German-American DJ Rik De Lisle, and singers Lisa Bialac and Lyma Russel, they developed the rock opera "Spliff Radio Show". It premiered live on May 24, 1980, at the Kant-Kino in Berlin and has been described as a satirical work about the music industry, centered on the fictional rock star Rocko J. Fonzo and depicting his rise and fall. The English-language album "Spliff Radio Show" was released in 1980 and performed in several European cities, including Paris, Zurich, Amsterdam, Stockholm, and London. While the album did not clearly present Spliff as the band name on its cover, the liner notes identified the four core musicians as the group, with additional performers credited separately. This approach reflected the band’s intention to avoid emphasizing a single front figure. In early 1982, the band released their first German-language album, "85555", under the name Spliff. The title referred to the album’s catalog number. The band name itself derives from a term for a cannabis cigarette and references a lyric from the song "Heiß" on the album "Nina Hagen Band". "85555" featured a minimalist cover design and was later released in an English-language version titled "85555 International Version". Spliff became associated with the Neue Deutsche Welle movement, although the band did not strongly identify with the label. Among their most successful songs from this period were "Heut’ Nacht" and "Carbonara". Other singles, including "Déjà Vu" from "85555" and "Das Blech" from the album "Herzlichen Glückwunsch", released in late 1982, also achieved chart success in Germany. A video for "Herzlichen Glückwunsch" was produced with Paul Schmitz-Moormann, who later became known as a trance music producer. In 1984, Spliff released their final studio album, "Schwarz auf Weiß", which included the single "Radio". The band undertook a tour with drummer Curt Cress, though it was less successful compared to previous activities. In 1985, Spliff disbanded due to musical differences and the members’ involvement in various solo projects. Spliff is the name of a grindcore band from Lixouri on the island of Kefalonia in Greece. The lineup has included members performing under the names El Crocodilo (guitar), Crunkhead (bass), Hydro Skunk 420 (vocals), and Sparky Red Eye (drums and backing vocals).
