About Small Enclosed Area
Small Enclosed Area was a rock band from Elgin, Scotland. Formed in 1999, the band consisted of Keith Milne (vocals), Richard Marshall (vocals/guitar), Blair Fraser (guitar), Ross Paterson (bass) and Stuart Russel (drums). The five had met in school and formed the group after being influenced by bands from the "outside world" such as Tool, Far, Mogwai and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The name was chosen due to the feeling of entrapment one feels from living in a small town in Scotland, isolated from the rest of the world. In 2000, an opening slot for fellow Elgin band Purple Munkie (now known as Fickle Public) at a local gig gave them their first chance to perform in public. They would play more Aberdeen dates over the next 6 months, and win a local BOTB competition to record a demo, which resulted in larger crowds and increased media interest. As a result of the increased attention, several indie labels started to contact them for gig dates and demos. One of these labels, Andover-based Hackpen Records, came to see them play the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen, and was so impressed that they offered to release the band’s first EP. Their debut EP 'Quintana' was released through Hackpen Records in March 2003, which received airplay on Radio1, Radio Scotland, Beat 106, Moray Firth, Northsound 1, and most even Radio Celuido in Spain. Topping their radio success, 'Quintana' charted in student music stations across the country - including Imperial College in London (holding the No 1 slot for two weeks), Stirling, Cardiff, Leicester, Loughborough and Wolverhampton. Small Enclosed Area were also played on the Selector programme, broadcast to 38 countries on FM and sponsored by the British Council and appear on "suBURBan Legends - Scotland" Compilation Album, run by British Underground Rock Bands. Good reviews came from Is this Music, Metal Only, Rock Sound, Artist Choice, as well as being rated at No.2 for best UK releases of the month by Whisperinandhollerin.com. In September 2004, Small Enclosed Area were ready to release their second EP 'Seventeen Whiskies'. This time, the band decided to self release the EP with the help of their newly appointed manager Steve Robertson, a music journalist and one of the people behind HUBL (Highlands Ultimate Band List). The band changed their name to Strong Like Ox in 2006. They would go on to release one song under the alias on the Kerrang! New Breed compilation before disbanding.
