About Blue Gum Ears

BLUE GUM EARS are a three piece based Moray, Scotland. The band have been together for eight years and during that time have played in some of the best venues around. Blue Gum Ears biggest achievment was opening the 'Budwiser True Music Stage' at 'Gig on the Green'. After the early days playing pubs and clubs local to the band BLUE GUM EARS started writing their own material . After a couple of years the decision was made to only play their own music and since then they havent looked back. Through the years they have developed a live sound and performance that is well known and well received by gig goers. Some reviews from Jockrock: Blue Gum Ears - VO(I)D (Hielanjam) Noisy buggers for sure - slightly US-college rock rushes along in a catchy way. '6 Hours' is a bit of a stop-start thing with a slightly grungey feel but 'Girlie' is more straightforward - ripping along nicely - ok, it's a bit in the Blink182 vein but with the Strokes overhyped and over here and trying to tell us they invented new wave, it's nice that we can outdo them at their own game. That's definitely their best track but they're at their best when tearing along, all guitar-powered, although 'Sex Together' is a fine tune too and might be a love ballad in these enlightened times. BGE are at their best when they're wavering on the line between Jawbreaker and Green Day - 'Verge of Destruction' is another slow one which just abouts breaks into life for the shoutalong hook. Blue Gum Ears - Subject to Rejection (Hielanjam) One of those psychobabble ideas on the go is that for success you have a wee saying - a mantra maybe- you chant, to help you reach your goal. And Blue Gum Ears could make it if they apply themselves. And select that all-important phrase wisely. What would it be? Don't let the bastards grind you down? Eat the rich? No - Or perhaps 'give the kids what they want'? Certainly for people who know their back catalogue - the 'VO(I)D' ep - they were doing a cartoon punkish thing but now they've moved on, or maybe got older. They clearly had a songwriting nous as evinced by 'Girly' which was an enjoyably infectious if slightly dumb-ass Blink 182 thing. A year ago it could have stood alongside any skate punk chart record. That was then, of course, and the subtle shift in consumer tastes means a more sophisticated blend of rock is in demand. So, of the 6 tracks here, 'No Reason' is trendy, happening and decidedly catchy , walking a precarious line between between Biffy - minus the stop-start complexity - and more conventional nu-rawk i.e. what gets above ..50 in the charts. Likewise, 'SOS DD' has a chorus to grace daytime radio, with meandering metal guitar just on the right side of snotty to cause Dave Pearce to fade it out early on Radio One. That might be that for a single but the bonus trackswill surely confound the listener. 'A Minor' is old School metal taking a lead from Iron Maiden while 'Beer Song' is a decided surprise, reaching their highland roots with fiddle and coming off like the Levellers. Going back to the first 4 tracks on this mini-album - - let's call it an ep with bonuses out- takes and their motto might be 'we have come for your children'. Give us a wave from Top of the Pops, guys. BLUE GUM EARS have recorded 7 CDs in their time and 4 are available to buy.
