About Massivan

Ivan Pezzini — better known as Massivan — was born in 1971, an Italian raised in Switzerland and shaped from the start by sound. The son of a violinist, he picked up the instrument at six, moved to drums soon after, and by 1993 was studying at the American Institute of Music in Vienna. Classical roots, a jazz education, a restless ear — the foundation for everything that followed. In 2000 he co-founded the Zurich-based imprint Modest Records and released a run of singles under the Josef's Ruhe alias. One of them, "Zürihorn", cut straight through to the dancefloor charts and became a peak-time staple for DJs like John Digweed, Sasha, Timo Maas and Steve Lawler. After four years deep in progressive house, Massivan pivoted. Teaming up with Jens Andersson as Calmstreet, he delivered Third Wave (Mole Listening Pearls, 2002) — a record that traded club pressure for a smoked-out fusion of pop and lounge. Spring 2003 brought the move that would define the next chapter: Formentera. The tiny Balearic island became home base, and the legendary Blue Bar became his residency — sunset sets he's still playing two decades later, alongside co-compiling and mastering most of the venue's celebrated compilations. Solo albums followed in steady waves. Daylife (2005) leaned Latin, jazzy, sun-warmed. Massenwahn (2006) went the other direction — electro-pop and psy-trance edges — the same year he took up residency at Space Ibiza's Gorgeous night and mixed its compilation. Wide (2007) brought him back down to a downtempo-jazz register, trailed by the Wider and Widest remix EPs. Family With 3 Hearts (Pschent, 2011) produced the single "2 B @ 1 With The World", which found its way onto a long list of prestige compilations — Hotel Costes and Buddha Bar among them. Late 2011 saw him co-produce Bea Luna's Formentera LP with German drummer Wolfgang Haffner, pulling in a deep bench of international jazz players for his own imprint Pmusica. Satisfied (Poets Club Records, 2013) and Slowoscope (Pmusica, 2016) extended the run, while the full Modest Records back catalogue was resurrected under the Modest Electronica banner. Now the story opens its next chapter. Massivan's seventh studio album, "Clubology", is out — a return to the floor, distilled through everything the last two decades taught him. Recent singles have landed on Irma Dancefloor, Suicide Robot and other respected homes for dance music that thinks. The journey from Formentera to the rest of the world — and back — continues. And so does the sound of Massivan.
