About Madre Monte
Melbourne 9 piece Latin/Reggae band, Madre Monte, play the deep, spellbinding grooves of Colombia in an Australian setting, allowing Australian audiences to get a taste of these captivating sounds. The band was born in 2008 when Colombians Mauro Gomez and Henry Peña felt a great need to play and represent their native Colombian sounds and rhythms in Australia. After seeing that the music needed more energy, more friends started joining the project. Drums, trumpet, percussion, guitars and other instruments like saxophone and trombone became members of what Madre Monte is today. The band's sound is a mix of Reggae and different autochthonous and indigenous rhythms from Latin America, specifically paying tribute to the Colombian style Cumbia. Having Cumbia, traditional Latin American music and Reggae as the main musical influences, it seemed appropriate to mix stories from the myths and legendsof Colombian folklore with global social issues to create the lyrics. With this Madre Monte combines Reggae and Cumbia, not just in the union of rhythmand music, but also in the philosophy and mysticism behind the lyrics. Since Madre Monte’s formation, it's deep grooves have taken them to different venues and festivals around Melbourne, such as the Evelyn hotel, the Espy, East Brunswick Club, City Square, Visible Sessions 2010 at the Arts Centre, Ballarat’s Multicultural Festival, PBS FM’s Rock-A-Bye-Baby Music Sessions and St Kilda Festival 2011. With the release of their first EP entitled Reaction in 2010, Madre Monte will be playing bigger events including Port Fairy Folk Festival 2011, Viva Festival 2011 at Federation Square, as well as shows inner and inter state.
