About LYDIA CANAAN
Lydia Canaan (Arabic: ليديا كنعان) is a singer-songwriter, poet, human rights activist, and United Nations delegate. Praised by Billboard magazine as having a "four-octave range and perfect pitch", she was hailed by the mass media as the first rock star of the Middle East and was the first Middle-Easterner whose music videos appeared on MTV Europe, MTV Asia, and MTV Russia. For Lydia, born and raised in a country dictated by war, music and singing were her personal salvation. In the midst of the war and destruction that ravaged Lebanon, Lydia, then performing under the stage name "Angel", performed many sell-out concerts all over the country, topping the charts as anthems of the youth reflecting their pain and resentment of war and violence. A rebel, defying all dangers to her life by war and social stigmas by family and society with her extraordinary courage and determination, Lydia became a symbol of hope, peace, and tolerance to the young generation. After a very successful career in Lebanon, Lydia worked with renowned writers, musicians, and producers in Switzerland, the UK, and the U.S. Lydia recorded duet "Love and Lust" with Roger Taylor (drummer of Queen) and "Spiritual Man" and "The Bridge" with Robin Scott (former group M). Lydia's international release of the song "Beautiful Life" from London gained her critical acclaim from the British and American music press, comparing her to Celine Dion, Cher, Tina Turner, and Tina Arena. "Beautiful Life" was chosen by Nelson Mandela as the theme song for a charity event under his auspices in South Africa. MTV Europe dubbed her as “the diva from the Middle East”. Lydia is an artist with a purpose, a devoted and passionate advocate of Women Empowerment, humanitarian, social causes, and animal welfare. Lydia was awarded for her humanitarian contributions by Ives de San, Head of UNDP in Lebanon. "Libnan", written and performed by Lydia, is the theme song of the advertisement "Rediscover Lebanon", broadcast by CNN to over one-billion viewers in 2004, and commissioned by the Lebanese Government to promote Lebanon as a tourist destination. Lydia delivered a speech before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland on March 17 and June 17, 2014.
