Laura Ann Kruteck (née Branigan; July 3, 1952 – August 26, 2004) was an American singer. She achieved commercial success in the 1980s, with her 1982 cover of Umberto Tozzi’s single "Gloria" reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and staying on the chart for 36 weeks. The song also reached number one in Australia and Canada and entered the top 10 of the UK Singles Chart. In 1984, Branigan's single "Self Control" reached number one in Canada and Germany and number four in the United States, also achieving top 10 status in the United Kingdom. Other notable singles included "Solitaire" (1983), which reached the U.S. top 10, "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" (1983), which topped the U.S. Adult Contemporary Chart, the Australian number two hit "Ti amo" (1984), a cover of Tozzi's 1977 single, "The Power of Love" (1987), which returned her to the U.S. top 40, and "Shattered Glass" (1987), which reached the top 15 of the U.S. dance chart. Her most commercially successful studio album was "Self Control" (1984), which was certified platinum. Branigan also contributed to soundtracks for film and television, including "Flashdance" (1983), "Ghostbusters" (1984), and "Miami Vice" (1984). In 1984, she won the Tokyo Music Festival with the song "The Lucky One." Branigan's chart performance declined toward the end of the 1980s. Her later studio albums, "Laura Branigan" (1990) and "Over My Heart" (1993), received limited commercial attention, and she largely withdrew from public life during the remainder of the 1990s. She returned to performing in the early 2000s, appearing as Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway musical "Love, Janis." While preparing new music and a return to the music industry, Branigan died at her home in August 2004 from a previously undiagnosed cerebral aneurysm. Her music experienced renewed attention in 2019 when "Gloria" was adopted by the NHL's St. Louis Blues as an unofficial victory song during their mid-season turnaround, culminating in the team winning its first Stanley Cup in franchise history.
