About Johnny Gill
Johnny Gill Jr. (born May 22, 1966) is an American singer and songwriter. He is a member of the R&B/pop group New Edition and was part of the supergroup LSG with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat. Gill has released eight solo albums, three albums with New Edition, two albums with LSG, and one collaborative album with Stacy Lattisaw. He has sold over 15 million copies worldwide as a solo artist. Gill was born in Washington, D.C., the son of Johnny Gill Sr., a Baptist minister, and Annie Mae Gill. He began singing at the age of five in a family gospel group called Little Johnny and "Wings of Faith", which included his brothers Bobby, Jeff, and Randy Gill. He attended Kimball Elementary, Sousa Junior High, and the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, completing his high school education with the help of a tutor. He initially planned to study electrical engineering in college but chose to focus on his music career. Gill's recording career began in 1982 when Stacy Lattisaw encouraged him to record a demo, which led to his debut self-titled album released on Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records. He later recorded the duet album "Perfect Combination" with Lattisaw, followed by his second solo album "Chemistry" in 1985. In 1987, Gill joined New Edition after Bobby Brown was voted out. He became one of the lead singers on the album "Heart Break", contributing to songs such as "Can You Stand the Rain", "N.E. Heartbreak", "If It Isn't Love", and "Boys to Men". His third solo album, "Johnny Gill" (1990), included the hits "My, My, My", "Rub You the Right Way", "Fairweather Friend", and "Wrap My Body Tight". In 1993, he released "Provocative", featuring songs like "Quiet Time to Play", "A Cute, Sweet, Love Addiction", and "I Know Where I Stand". Gill released "Let's Get the Mood Right" in 1996, which included "Love in an Elevator" and "Maybe". He reunited with New Edition for the album "Home Again" the same year. In 1997, he formed the supergroup LSG, releasing the debut album "Levert.Sweat.Gill" and the follow-up "LSG2" in 2003. New Edition reunited in 2004, signing with Bad Boy Records and releasing "One Love", which included the single "Hot 2Nite". After a 15-year break from solo albums, Gill released "Still Winning" in 2011, featuring tracks such as "In the Mood", "Just the Way You Are", "It Would Be You", and "2nd Place". In 2014, he founded his own label, J Skillz Records, and released "Game Changer", which included singles "Behind Closed Doors" and "Game Changer". New Edition bandmates appeared on the track "This One's for Me and You". He toured as an opening act for Charlie Wilson's "In It to Win It" tour in 2017. In 2019, he released "Game Changer II". In 2023, his song "Rub You the Right Way" gained renewed popularity on TikTok. Gill has appeared in over 80 television and film projects as a singer and actor. He had a cameo on "Family Matters", sang "You For Me" in the movie "Madea's Family Reunion" (2006), and starred in the stage play "A Mother's Prayer" (2009) alongside Robin Givens, Shirley Murdock, and Jermaine Crawford.
