The music of Canalón de Timbiquí evokes ancestral sounds from the Colombian Pacific coast, which is primarily inhabited by Afro-Colombians. This music recreates all the power and rhythms of the chonta marimba with the guasá and the bass drum. Their melodies and lyrics speak of the jungle, rivers, mining, and everything that happens in their town. Hailing from Timbiquí in the department of Cauca on the Pacific Coast, the singers are led by Nidia Góngora and supported by a band that uses a variety of traditional percussion instruments such as cununos, bass drums, and the chonta marimba. They were nominated for a 2019 Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album, won two editions of the Petronio Álvarez Festival, and won the Shock Awards for Best Folk Album.
