About Gigi D´agostino

Luigino Celestino Di Agostino (born 17 December 1967), known professionally as Gigi D'Agostino, is an Italian DJ and music producer. He began his career in 1986 as a DJ performing Italo disco. His notable chart successes include "Bla Bla Bla", "Another Way", a cover of Nik Kershaw's "The Riddle", "La Passion", "Super", and "L'Amour toujours", released mainly between 1999 and 2000. The hookline of "L'Amour toujours" was later used in the 2018 game remix "In My Mind". D'Agostino was born in Turin, Italy, to parents from Salerno, Campania, and spent his childhood between Turin and Brescia. Before pursuing music professionally, he worked as a stonemason and fitter. He started DJing by organizing parties at clubs, debuting at a club near Turin called "Woodstock", and later performing at Palladio in Cascinette d'Ivrea and Le Palace in the Valentino Castle Garden in Turin. From 1993 to 1998, he was a resident DJ at the Italian disco Ultimo Impero. D'Agostino's first release was "Noise Maker Theme", a double-A-sided record, which launched the Noise Maker label under the direction of Italo house producer Gianfranco Bortolotti. He collaborated with Daniele Gas and Mauro Picotto's production team. As a DJ, he is associated with Mediterranean Progressive Dance, characterized by minimalistic sounds and Mediterranean melodies. Using the pseudonym "Gigi Dag", he adapted tracks for mainstream audiences. After the release of "Sweetly", D'Agostino joined Bortolotti's Media Records team. His single "FLY" (1996) reached the top of Italian sales charts, followed by "Gigi's Violin". He also collaborated with R.A.F. by Mauro Picotto on "Angel's Symphony" and released his debut album "Gigi D'Agostino", which sold over 60,000 copies. His musical style evolved toward melodic Italo dance, combining house and progressive sounds. He released several singles including "Gin Lemon" (1997), "Your Love (Elisir)" (1998), "Cuba Libre" (1998), and "Bla Bla Bla" (1999), and compiled "Eurodance Compilation", earning a platinum disc and "Best Producer in 1999" at the Italian Dance Awards. In October 1999, he released "Another Way". The album "L'Amour toujours" (1999, released in the United States in 2001) included 23 tracks and achieved commercial success, with "L'Amour toujours" reaching the 10th position in Italian sales charts. "Bla Bla Bla" became a major European hit. In 2000, his remake of "The Riddle" sold over 1,000,000 copies in Germany and 200,000 in France. He also released "Tecno Fes" (August 2000) and "Tecno Fes - EP, Vol. 2" (December 2000). In 2001, he released "L'Amour toujours EP" with new versions of "L'Amour toujours" and "Un giorno credi", the latter reaching top positions in Italy. He received awards for "Best DJ-Producer of the Year" at the Red Bull Awards in Italy, and "Super", a collaboration with Albertino, won "Best Dance Producer" at the PIM Italian Music Award and the Public Award at the Danish DJs Award. In December 2001, he released "Il grande viaggio", a compilation of electronic tracks. In 2003, he released "Ripassa" in the EP "Underconstruction 1: Silence", contributing to the development of the Lento Violento subgenre. On 15 July 2004, his compilation "Euro Dance" was certified platinum. In December 2004, he released his fourth studio album "L'Amour toujours II". D'Agostino has performed in clubs across Europe, including Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Germany, Switzerland, and England, including a 1996 performance at Ministry of Sound in London with Mauro Picotto. In 2006, he founded the record label "Noisemaker Hard". In 2007, he released the compilation "Lento Violento ...e altre storie", containing 35 Lento Violento tracks, followed by "La musica che pesta" under the name "Lento Violento Man", comprising 38 unmixed tracks. From 2005 to 2010, he hosted radio programs on the Italian station m2o, including "Il Cammino di Gigi D'Agostino" and "Quello che mi piace", featuring DJ sets and remixes. In 2011, he released the digital single "Stay With Me". In May 2017, his music was reported to be popular in the Canadian Inuit community of Arviat due to similarities with traditional Inuit drum-dancing. In 2018, he collaborated with Dynoro on "In My Mind", which achieved international success. In May 2024, "L'Amour toujours" was banned at several festivals in Germany after it was used in a context associated with nationalist slogans.
