About Franz Koglmann

Franz Koglmann (b. 1947) is a Viennese composer, trumpeter and flugelhornist. His music is known for its unique conflation of 1. West Coast cool jazz in the vein of Chet Baker, Jimmy Giuffre and Lennie Tristano, along with 2. European classical Romantic composers such as Franz Schubert and 3. specifically fin-de-siècle Viennese composers Alban Berg and Anton Webern. He has also been heavily inspired by work outside of the musical sphere, such as poetry, philosophy, visual arts and film. Koglmann composes in a style he has referred to as 'melancholy decadence', recording the works with jazz chamber ensembles of various sizes. From the early 1980s and beyond improvising musicians such as Steve Lacy, Paul Bley, Misha Mengelberg, Ran Blake, Lee Konitz and Derek Bailey have all made appearances on his recordings. In 1987 he received the Music Award of the Republic of Austria for his compositions. Koglmann worked as artistic director for the label 'Between the Lines' 1998 - 2004 from which several of his albums were released. The label Col Legno began releasing Koglmann's recordings in 2009.
