About Foreigner

Foreigner is a British–American rock band formed in New York City in 1976. The original lineup consisted of Lou Gramm (vocals), Mick Jones (guitar), Ed Gagliardi (bass), Dennis Elliott (drums), Al Greenwood (keyboards), and Ian McDonald (multi-instrumentalist, formerly of King Crimson). Foreigner has sold over 80 million records worldwide, including approximately 38 million in the United States. The band name reflects the mixed nationalities of its members: Jones, Elliott, and McDonald were British, while Gramm, Greenwood, and Gagliardi were American. In 1977, Foreigner released its self-titled debut album, the first of six consecutive albums to be certified multi-platinum and reach the US Top 10. The album included the singles "Feels Like the First Time" and "Cold as Ice." Their 1978 follow-up, "Double Vision," produced the US hits "Hot Blooded" and "Double Vision." Foreigner's third album, "Head Games" (1979), the first with Rick Wills replacing Gagliardi on bass, featured the singles "Dirty White Boy" and "Head Games," both reaching the US Top 20. The fourth album, "4" (1981), reached number one in the US for ten weeks and became the band's breakthrough in the UK, reaching the Top 5. Singles from "4" included "Urgent," "Waiting for a Girl Like You," and "Juke Box Hero." Following the 1982 greatest hits album "Records," which was certified seven times platinum in the US, the band released "Agent Provocateur" in 1984. This album reached number one in the UK and featured their biggest hit, "I Want to Know What Love Is," which topped the charts in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia, reached number three in Germany, and entered the Top 10 in several other countries. After a hiatus, Foreigner released "Inside Information" in 1987. Despite including the US Top 10 singles "Say You Will" and "I Don't Want to Live Without You," the album did not reach multi-platinum certification or the US Top 10. The 1992 greatest hits album "The Very Best ... and Beyond" achieved double platinum certification in the US and gold certification in the UK. Foreigner was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.
