About Eagles of Death Metal

Eagles of Death Metal is an American rock band from Palm Desert, California, formed in 1998. It was founded by Jesse Hughes (vocals, guitar) and Josh Homme (drums). The band has featured a rotating lineup of additional musicians for studio recordings and live performances. Hughes and Homme are the only consistent members, although Homme has rarely performed live due to commitments with his other band, Queens of the Stone Age. The current touring lineup includes Hughes, Leah Bluestein (drums), Scott Shiflett (guitar), Jennie Vee (bass), and Rex Roulette (guitar). Despite their name, Eagles of Death Metal are not a death metal band, and the name is intended to be humorous. In a 2003 interview, Homme described the band's sound as a combination of "bluegrass slide guitar mixed with stripper drum beats and Canned Heat vocals." Hughes is known for energetic audience interaction during live performances. The origin of the band's name has been described in multiple, sometimes differing accounts. In one account given in a video interview at a Converse Music event in London, Hughes recalled an incident in which a man dancing to the song "Wind of Change" by the Scorpions referred to it as "death metal," prompting Homme to jokingly respond that it was "like the Eagles of death metal." Another account suggests the phrase arose during a discussion about the Polish band Vader, when Homme referred to them as "the Eagles of death metal," which later led Hughes to imagine a fusion of the Eagles and a death metal band. The band first appeared in 1998 on Josh Homme's "The Desert Sessions Volumes 3 & 4". Over the following years, activity slowed due to Homme's focus on Queens of the Stone Age, though he later reiterated his continued involvement with the project. The band's debut album, "Peace, Love, Death Metal", was released in 2004. Several tracks were used in advertising campaigns and media placements, including commercials for companies such as Ask.com, Comcast, Nissan Motors, Budweiser, Pontiac Motors, and Wendy's, as well as promotional material for the film "Thank You for Smoking" and the film "Grindhouse". The song "I Only Want You" appeared in the video game "Gran Turismo 4" and in promotional use by Microsoft for Windows 8. "Miss Alissa" was used in a campaign video for the FIFA World Cup 2014 featuring multiple footballers. Their second album, "Death by Sexy", was released in 2006. The band toured with artists including The Strokes, Peaches, Joan Jett, and briefly opened for Guns N' Roses. Some tracks from the album were used in video games, films, and television, including "Tony Hawk's Project 8", "Need for Speed: Carbon", "True Blood", and "Criminal Minds". The song "Cherry Cola" was also used in a Microsoft Zune advertisement. The third album, "Heart On", was released in 2008. The single "Wannabe in L.A." was featured in the video game "Midnight Club: Los Angeles" and later in other video games and media. Other songs from the album were used in films and advertising campaigns. During this period, the band toured in North America and performed with Arctic Monkeys. In 2010, touring bassist Brian O'Connor was diagnosed with cancer, and benefit performances were organised to support his treatment, with musicians including Josh Homme, Dave Grohl, and John Paul Jones participating. Abby Travis filled in on bass during O'Connor's recovery. In 2011, Jesse Hughes released a solo album under the name Boots Electric titled "Honkey Kong". In 2013, Hughes indicated that work on a new album was underway. The band subsequently announced live performances in the United Kingdom and appearances at festivals. In 2015, the album "Zipper Down" was released, preceded by the single "Complexity". On 13 November 2015, the band was performing at the Bataclan theatre in Paris during a sold-out concert when an attack occurred in which armed individuals opened fire on the audience. Approximately 90 people were killed. The performance was interrupted during the song "Kiss the Devil". Several members of the band and crew escaped the venue through different exits, while others took shelter inside the building and were later evacuated. One member of the band's merchandise team, Nick Alexander, was among those killed. Following the attack, tributes and fundraising efforts were organised, including a campaign to promote the band's cover of "Save a Prayer" by Duran Duran. The band later issued statements expressing gratitude to emergency responders and those who assisted during the incident. A benefit initiative encouraged artists to cover the song "I Love You All the Time", with proceeds directed to support victims. Several artists participated in the campaign. In December 2015, the band appeared on stage with U2 in Paris for a joint performance that included "People Have the Power" and "I Love You All the Time". The band later returned to the Bataclan to pay respects to the victims. They subsequently resumed touring under the name "Nos Amis Tour", which included a performance in Paris in February 2016 where previous Bataclan ticket holders were admitted free of charge. In 2016, Jesse Hughes made public comments regarding the Bataclan attack that were later criticised, after which he issued an apology. The band was removed from the lineup of the Rock en Seine festival. A documentary titled "Eagles of Death Metal: Nos Amis (Our Friends)", directed by Colin Hanks, was released in 2017 and focused on the band and the aftermath of the attack. In later years, the band continued touring and performing, including appearances in the United States and Europe. Jennie Vee joined as bassist during this period. In 2017, the band also became involved in scoring the film "Super Troopers 2". In 2018, they performed a New Year's Eve show in California, during which "Kiss the Devil" was performed for the first time in several years. As of a reported update, the band is scheduled to tour in August 2026.
