Caliban were formed in Hattingen, Germany, in 1997 under the name Never Again. The original lineup consisted of vocalists Andreas Dörner and Marc Ulfig, guitarists Björn Kaiser and Marc Görtz, bassist Engin Güres, and drummer Kai Kogelheide. After about six months and several lineup changes, Ulfig, Kaiser, and Kogelheide left the group and were replaced by Claus Wilgenbusch and Robert Krämer. The band recorded two songs for another demo that was never released. These songs were sent to several record labels, and Lifeforce Records offered the group a recording contract. By this time the band had adopted the name Caliban. Their first self-titled EP, "Caliban", was released in the summer of 1998, and the band promoted it through concerts across Europe, including support shows for Morning Again, Earth Crisis, and Cro-Mags. In July 2005 they released a second split album with Heaven Shall Burn titled "The Split Program II". Their fifth album, "The Undying Darkness", was released in February 2006, followed by a European tour with All Shall Perish, Bleeding Through, and I Killed the Prom Queen titled "Darkness over Europe".
