Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock and roll band formed in 1947 and active until Bill Haley’s death in 1981. The group was also known as Bill Haley and the Comets and Bill Haley's Comets. Between late 1954 and late 1956, they recorded nine singles that reached the top 20 on the charts, including one number-one hit and three additional top-ten singles. Their 1954 recording "Rock Around the Clock" became one of the best-selling rock singles in history and remained highly influential for several years. Bill Haley had previously performed Western swing music. After recording a rockabilly version of Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm’s "Rocket 88", which is considered one of the earliest rock and roll recordings, Haley shifted his band’s style toward rock and roll. The group recorded several hit singles, including "Crazy Man, Crazy", "Shake, Rattle & Roll", "Dim, Dim the Lights", "Rock-A-Beatin' Boogie", "Razzle-Dazzle", "See You Later, Alligator", "The Saints Rock 'N' Roll", and "Rip It Up". In 1956, the band appeared in the films "Rock Around the Clock" and "Don't Knock the Rock" alongside disc jockey Alan Freed. Although the band was a prominent figure in the early years of rock and roll, the arrival of performers such as Elvis Presley and Little Richard contributed to a decline in their popularity in the United States by the late 1950s. Haley maintained a following in Europe and experienced a resurgence as a nostalgia act in the 1970s. After Haley’s death, multiple groups have performed under the Comets name, claiming continuity with the original band. By the end of 2014, four such groups were still performing internationally and in the United States.
