About Alonso de Torices
José Alonso de Torices (Torizes) was born in Benavente (Zamora) around 1635. In 1652 he entered the cathedral of Zamora as a choir boy. In 1654 he was appointed master of the chapel of the cathedral of El Burgo de Osma (Soria). He was ordained a priest in 1658. In 1663 he was elected by opposition master of chapel of Sigüenza and months later of the cathedral of Zamora, a position he held until 1666. Although in this year 1666 he was elected master of the cathedral of Malaga, he did not take office until 1667. In 1671 he was appointed master of the chapel of the Pilar de Zaragoza, a position in which he only remained for months, returning to Malaga. He died in this city around 1684. He is the author of religious music that is preserved in various archives in Spain and Latin America. In more than one case it is possible that the works attributed to him correspond to the composer and organist Benito Bello de Torices. In Arantzazu there is a Dixit Dominus and a Christmas carol to San Francisco, in which the authorship appears as "Torizes", choosing to attribute them to Alonso Torizes.
