About Juan de la Bermeja
Juan de la Bermeja Sevilla (Zamarramala, ¿? - Toledo, April 18, 1642) was a Spanish composer and master of a chapel. He was born in Zamarramala, a town in the municipality of Segovia, on an unknown date, the son of Juan de la Bermeja and Catalina de Sevilla, also originally from Zamarramala. He entered as an infant of the music chapel of the Cathedral of El Burgo de Osma on December 29, 1608, where he is supposed to be musically trained. On June 7, 1613, he entered as a waiter of the black clothing choir in the Cathedral of Segovia with the name of Juan de León. Cristóbal de Isla left his teaching in the Cathedral of El Burgo de Osma in 1616. After the departure from Isla to Palencia, the council of El Burgo de Osma organized some oppositions to occupy the position, to which a musician from Soria, another from Logroño named Juan Mateo, and finally the one who would win, Juan de la Bermeja, "has made a lot of advantage to the others, I craved in the counterpoint, composition, as in the rigor Collegiate Church of Logroño". On August 1, 1616, he received the ration of teacher of El Burgo. He said goodbye to his position on March 11, 1619 and despite the fact that the council tried to retain him, it was not possible. On February 26, 1619, Bermeja had been appointed master of the chapel of the Cathedral of Segovia, after winning some oppositions. He stayed for a very short time, since he left for Toledo in December. On November 14, 1619 he was elected chapel master of the Cathedral of Toledo, Primacy of Spain, one of the most important positions he could aspire to in Spain. Among the news left in the chapter acts it can be mentioned: on January 20, 1634 he received 3000 maravedís as a salary for the Christmas carols and Rexes; on February 6, 1634 On August 22, 1637, 6800 maravedís were given to him to buy two singing books composed by Manuel Cardoso. He died in Toledo on April 28, 1642. He was buried next to Saint Helena. Musicologists Pedrell and Anglés mention an In exitu Israel of Bermeja preserved in Córdoba. Anglés also mentions two works in La Seo - which has not been confirmed by Calahorra - and in the Royal College of Corpus Christi in Valencia. Other works can be found in El Escorial. There are no works by Bermeja in Segovia or Toledo
