About Nicolás Mariner
Nicolás Mariner (Teruel, 16th century - Valencia, 1636) was a Spanish composer and master of chapel. Data on Mariner's origin are unknown except for his Teruel origin. The first news is from July 15, 1597 with his arrival at the Cathedral of Valencia as a singer. A year later, in December 1598, he was expelled from the music chapel for having been absent without justification, "nulla petita license". Possibly the absence was related to his presence in the oppositions in Segorbe. In 1598 he applied to the oppositions for the magisterium of the Cathedral of Segorbe, which he won, being appointed chapel master in December 1598. It was determined to pay the Mosén Mariner Factory for a part 2 pounds a Castilian royal more for the admission to the distributions and to the layer 8 pounds, 17 salaries and 6 money; by summoning 80 salaries and the Notary one pound. Total, 12 pounds, 4 salaries and 6 money. Chapter Acts of the Cathedral of Segorbe, December 7, 1598 He remained in Segorbe until 1600, when he was re-ented as a tenor in the Cathedral of Valencia. A year later he was appointed organist, replacing José Isasi. He continued in office until 1621, when he replaced the master of the chapel Vicente García. He had to remain in office until 1632, when master of the chapel of the Cathedral of Valencia the master of Valencia was appointed. Climent affirms that he must have died in 1636, since in April the Cabildo issues edicts "for the death of Nicolás Mariner." Some compositions by Mariner are preserved in the archive of the Cathedral of Segorbe. Among them there are motets and Christmas carols; as well as two passions, In domine Palmarum and In dominica Veneris, which contain the entire evangelical text of the passions according to St. Matthew and St. John respectively, both in four voices. He also composed Turba in dominica palmarum, a cuatro voces; In Die veneris; Passio, a cuatro voces;Turbe ferie sexta, a cinco voces; responsos Domine quando veneris, Ne recorderis y Libera me de viis inferni, a cuatro voces; and a Christmas caroi a la Virgen, Hermosísima maielle, a cinco voces.
