About The Guess Who
The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in 1958. The group achieved its greatest commercial success between 1969 and 1972 with songs such as "American Woman", "These Eyes", "No Time", "Laughing", and "Share the Land". During this period, they released multiple studio albums that charted in both Canada and the United States. The 1970 album "American Woman" reached number 1 in both countries, and several other releases reached the top ten in Canada. The band also achieved numerous Top 40 singles in both Canada and the United States. The group originated as Al and the Silvertones, formed by Chad Allan in 1958. After several lineup changes, the band became Chad Allan and the Reflections in 1962, featuring Allan, Randy Bachman, Jim Kale, Garry Peterson, and Bob Ashley. They released early singles with limited regional success before changing their name to Chad Allan and the Expressions. Their 1965 single "Shakin' All Over", originally recorded by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, became a major hit in Canada and reached the charts internationally. The single was initially credited to "Guess Who?" as part of a promotional campaign, leading to the adoption of the name. In 1966, Burton Cummings joined the band as keyboardist and vocalist, soon becoming the sole lead singer after Allan’s departure. The group released "It's Time" in 1966 and gained further exposure as a house band on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation radio and television programs. Their association with producer Jack Richardson led to the release of "A Wild Pair", a split album connected to a Coca-Cola promotion. The band’s commercial breakthrough came with "Wheatfield Soul" in 1969, which included the hit "These Eyes". This was followed by "Canned Wheat" later that year. In 1970, the band released "American Woman", which incorporated harder rock elements and became their most successful album. The title track reached number 1 in both Canada and the United States, making the Guess Who the first Canadian band to top the Billboard Hot 100. Following this success, Randy Bachman left the band in 1970 and was replaced by Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw. The revised lineup recorded "Share the Land" in 1970, which continued the group’s commercial success. Subsequent releases, including "So Long, Bannatyne" (1971) and "Rockin'" (1972), incorporated more experimental and progressive elements. During this period, the band underwent several personnel changes, including the departures of Leskiw and Jim Kale, with Bill Wallace joining as bassist. The group continued to release albums such as "Artificial Paradise" (1973), "#10" (1973), and "Road Food" (1974), the latter featuring the single "Clap for the Wolfman". In 1974, Kurt Winter and Donnie McDougall were replaced by Domenic Troiano, whose influence contributed to a shift toward jazz rock on the albums "Flavours" (1974) and "Power in the Music" (1975). Differences over musical direction led to the band’s dissolution in October 1975. After the breakup, members pursued various projects. Randy Bachman formed Bachman–Turner Overdrive, while Burton Cummings began a solo career. Other members were involved in additional musical projects or left the music industry. Several reunions of classic-era members took place between 1979 and 2003, including tours and live recordings. In 1978, former bassist Jim Kale began performing under the Guess Who name after initially receiving permission for a single reunion performance. He later secured trademark rights to the name in the United States and continued touring with changing lineups, at times as the only former member involved. This version of the band released recordings and performed live over several decades, often with limited commercial impact. The use of the band name led to a prolonged legal dispute between Kale and original members Randy Bachman and Burton Cummings. In 2023, Bachman and Cummings initiated legal action alleging misleading use of the name and associated imagery. In 2024, legal developments and licensing actions restricted the performance of many of the band’s well-known songs by Kale’s group, leading to the cancellation of concerts and the cessation of that version of the band. Later in 2024, Bachman and Cummings announced that they had regained control of the Guess Who name through a settlement. In 2025, they confirmed plans to reform the band for a tour in 2026 with a new lineup including additional musicians.
