About Joe Satriani

Joseph Satriani (born July 15, 1956) is an American rock guitarist, composer, record producer, and songwriter. He began his career as a guitar instructor, teaching students who later achieved prominence, including Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett, and Alex Skolnick. From the mid-1980s onward, he established a successful solo career as an instrumental rock artist. He has received multiple Grammy Award nominations and has sold over ten million albums worldwide. In 1988, he was recruited by Mick Jagger as lead guitarist for the singer’s first solo tour. In 1993, he toured with Deep Purple as a temporary replacement for Ritchie Blackmore. In 1995, he founded the G3 concert tour, featuring a rotating lineup of guitarists. Since 2008, he has been a member of the hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot. Satriani was born in Westbury, New York, to an Italian-American family. He became interested in playing guitar at the age of 14 after learning of the death of Jimi Hendrix. He studied music with jazz guitarist Billy Bauer and pianist Lennie Tristano, whose technical approach influenced his playing. He later taught guitar while pursuing formal music studies, eventually relocating to Berkeley, California, where he continued teaching students who would go on to join bands such as Metallica, Primus, Testament, and Exodus. In the late 1970s, he formed the band Squares. He later joined the Greg Kihn Band, which helped him finance the recording of his debut solo album "Not of This Earth", released in 1986. His second album, "Surfing with the Alien" (1987), achieved significant commercial success and became one of the most prominent instrumental rock albums of its time. Tracks from the album and subsequent releases appeared in films, television programmes, and advertisements. In 1989, he released "Flying in a Blue Dream", followed by "The Extremist" in 1992, which became his most commercially successful album in the United States. During this period, several of his compositions received radio airplay and media exposure. The G3 tour, launched in 1996, featured Satriani alongside other guitarists such as Steve Vai and Eric Johnson, with guest appearances by numerous notable musicians over the years. In 1998, he released "Crystal Planet", followed by the more experimental "Engines of Creation". Live recordings from performances in San Francisco were issued as "Live in San Francisco" in 2001. In the 2000s, Satriani continued releasing studio albums, including "Strange Beautiful Music" (2002), "Is There Love in Space?" (2004), and "Super Colossal" (2006). He also released live recordings such as "Satriani Live!". In 2008, he issued "Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock". That same year, he joined Chickenfoot, a supergroup featuring Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, and Chad Smith. The band released its self-titled debut album "Chickenfoot" in 2009 and followed it with "Chickenfoot III" in 2011. In 2008, Satriani filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Coldplay, alleging similarities between their song "Viva la Vida" and his composition "If I Could Fly". The case was dismissed in 2009, with both parties covering their own legal costs. Subsequent releases include "Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards" (2010), "Unstoppable Momentum" (2013), "Shockwave Supernova" (2015), "What Happens Next" (2018), and "Shapeshifting" (2020). In 2022, he released "The Elephants of Mars". He has also issued retrospective collections and a memoir titled "Strange Beautiful Music: A Memoir". Satriani has participated in tribute tours and collaborative projects, including performances celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix. He has also been involved in educational initiatives and guitar workshops. In addition to his solo work and band activities, Satriani has contributed to recordings by various artists, including albums such as "Imaginos", "Hey Stoopid", and "Break Like the Wind". He has collaborated on projects with musicians from bands such as Deep Purple and Dream Theater, and contributed to soundtracks for video games including "NASCAR 06: Total Team Control", "NHL 2K10", and "Madden NFL 11". He has also appeared in film and television, including roles in "For Your Consideration" and "Moneyball", as well as voice appearances in animated series such as "Metalocalypse" and "Aqua Teen Hunger Force". His music has been featured in television programmes including "American Dad!". In 2024, he reunited with former G3 collaborators for a tour and released the collaborative single "The Sea of Emotion, Pt.1".
