About Zach Prather & Slight Return

ZACH PRATHER, Chicago, Illinois, USA Born in Chicago, now living in Switzerland, he presents us a unique style: fans of the old British Blues-Rock of the Sixties and Seventies love Zach Prather's music as well as Chicago-Blues-Fans. At the age of 16 years Zach recorded his first single for Curtis Mayfield, even before he was singing, playing quitar and drums at all of Chicago's clubs. After teaming with Cash McCall in Los Angeles by the way of Chicago in the 70`s, guitarist Zach Prather, the “New Bad Boy of the Blues” (press: LA Times) had already performed with countless famous Blues Artists: Etta James, Screaming "J" Hawkins, Willy Dixon, Minnie Ripperton, Margie Evans, Luther Allison, just naming a few of them. With Willy Dixon he produced his first Blues record. “My music is no hobby, it is my life”, says Zach, 'I 'lived' each song.'" Later, based in Paris, he toured with Luther Allison for over three years in Europe where he clearly honed his impeccable sense of rhythm. Prather comes to his own on his newest release, Freak. His sound is a wonderful blend of funk, soul, and blues with a modern twist. He may be over 50 years old, but vocally he sounds decades younger. Freak offers a few covers, including Otis Rush’s All your lovin`and Lonnie Brooks Wound up tight. Prather’s Band, Slight Return, is no simple homage to Hendrix by any means. They lay down tight grooves on every song and the rhythmic interplay with Prather`s guitar will get hips shakin’. Zach Prather forges an identifiable sound that would be at home on any number of stages, from blues festivals to the jam band scene. With some radio ariplay and an early slot of Bonnaroo, Prather and his band would be very likely blow-up. He’s got the chops, the voice, and the funk to garner a wide and modern blues audience. - Marc Camarigg, Living Blues, February 2009
