About Wukir

Wukir Suryadi (born 27 December 1977 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia) is a musician from Indonesia that performs with a self-made bamboo instrument, reminds of the Sasando from Rote, an island part of the East Nusa Tenggara province of the Lesser Sunda Islands. A couple of distinct differences though between Wukir and Sasando music. Firstly, besides plucking the strings on the circular harp, he also bows the strings. Secondly, unlike the Sasando which has strings all around the instrument, Wukir’s instrument has strings only half the way, the other half is made up of hollowed bamboo that he strums on like a guitar. A couple of guitar pick-ups are modified and mounted on to this instrument, the vibrations are then outputted to a distortion pedal and sometimes a pedal that loops his audio.. His composition using the instrument create ambience sound in experimental way. Wukir now resides in Yogyakarta.
