About Vothana

Vothana is the inactive main project of Kenny Vu, a solo black metal musician from Minneapolis, MN, United States. Vothana was formed sometime in 2002-2003. The name for Vothana comes from the vietnamese word "Vô thần", which translates to atheist. Shortly after Vothana's formation, Kenny would start releasing many demos in limited quantities. These demo's showed an extremely lo-fi, riff-heavy style that when combined with their unattainable status, random samples of Vietnam War-era music, and their unintelligible Vietnamese lyrics with themes of war and pro-ARVN propaganda gave Vothana a cult-following. Many of these early demo tapes have surfaced online, much to the dismay of Vu, however there is still material that is gatekept by Vu and his earliest supporters, being dubbed by Vu as "private materials." Vothana's popularity would grow exponentially with his late run of full-length albums, with the trilogy of "Không bao giờ nộp", "Biệt động quân", and "Hành động bây giờ, tương lai đảm bảo" being his most popular albums by far. This new-found popularity, and his disdain with black metal in general led to him retiring the project in 2022, with the album "Trò chơi kết thúc", alternatively titled Game Over. He still continued to perform publicly as Vothana live with an ensemble of unknown members as late as 2024, and he still continues to reissue content on various labels to this day. It is rumored that he is still recording music, but whatever he has made since Game Over has been sent into the shadows where Vothana once began, never to be seen by the public eye.
