About Virgin Forest
Virgin Forest formed in Brooklyn as a group of musicians who had already spent years playing together in other projects before deciding to record under a shared name. The band was founded by Scott Stapleton, a multi‑instrumentalist known for his work with Castanets and later as a longtime member of Phosphorescent’s touring lineup. Stapleton brought together guitarist Jesse Anderson Ainslie, bassist Jeff Bailey, and drummer Christopher “Showtime” Marine — players who had shared vans, stages, and late‑night sessions long before Virgin Forest officially existed. Their chemistry wasn’t manufactured; it was the natural result of years spent making music side by side. Their debut album, Joy Atrophy (2011), introduced a sound that blended indie rock, folk, and a rough‑edged Americana sensibility. The record was released digitally through Partisan Records, with a physical LP handled by HeartBreakBeat Records. A year later, the band returned with Easy Way Out (2012), also released through Partisan. Though the album contains only six tracks, it was promoted and classified as a full‑length release, and it captured the band’s lived‑in dynamic, the kind of musical shorthand that comes from years of collaboration rather than formal rehearsals. After a long quiet period, Virgin Forest resurfaced with Shadows (2022), a self‑released album distributed through Records DK. The record marked a shift toward a more atmospheric, introspective sound while retaining the emotional grit that defined their earlier work. They followed it with Looking for Jim (2025), released through Betsy’s Lair via DistroKid, further expanding their catalog and reaffirming their identity as a band that moves at its own pace, outside the typical industry cycle. Virgin Forest has never been a heavily touring act under their own name, but the members have remained active performers through their work with Phosphorescent and other projects.
