About Βασίλης Παπακωνσταντίνου

Βασίλης Παπακωνσταντίνου [Vasilis Papakonstantinou] (b. 1950) is a Greek singer. He was born in a little village in Arkadia, though his family moved to Athens in 1957. He began singing at the age of twenty, and after his military service in 1973 he went to Munich, Germany, to participate and sing at anti-dictator rallies attended by many Greeks. In 1974 he met Μίκης Θεοδωράκης [Mikis Theodorakis] in Paris, and two years later they began to collaborate. He returned to Athens in 1974, and he started his professional career. He participated in Μάνος Λοΐζος' Τα τραγούδια του δρόμου (Ta tragoudia tou dromou). His meeting with Loizos and Thanos Mikroutsikos, two composers who brought a new sound to Greek music, was particularly fruitful, as Papakonstantinou was the ideal singer for the two artists. He worked for the first time in 1976 with Theodorakis who, two years later, included him in an international tour, giving him a chance to sing throughout Europe, America, and Australia. From that time he started showing the influence of foreign rock, in his first two albums which he recorded in the early 1980s.
