About Urban Priol
Urban Priol (born on May 14, 1961, in Aschaffenburg) is a German cabaret artist. In addition to his numerous stage performances, he gained particular recognition through the ZDF cabaret show "Neues aus der Anstalt" (News from the Institution) and other television formats. Urban Priol was born in 1961 in Aschaffenburg, and he spent his childhood in Obernburg am Main. In 1980, he completed his Abitur (high school diploma) at Kronberg-Gymnasium Aschaffenburg. After basic training with the armored grenadiers, where he was supposed to become a medic, he refused military service and performed civilian service with the Malteser Hilfsdienst. Priol started a teaching degree at the University of Würzburg with English, Russian, and History as subjects but discontinued it shortly before graduation. In 1988, he co-founded (Artistic Director) the cabaret stage "Kochsmühle" in Obernburg, and since 1998, he has been the owner of the Kabarett im Hofgarten. Priol has been a member of the anti-globalization network Attac since May 2009. Priol made his first stage appearances in 1982. In his first television show "Alles muss raus" (Everything Must Go) on 3sat (2004–2007), he provided a platform for three to four guests from the cabaret scene. The show humorously addressed political and societal events of the preceding weeks. On August 3, 2006, ZDF aired a 45-minute excerpt from Priol's program "Täglich frisch" (Fresh Daily) as part of the series "Sommersolo" (Summer Solo). The series ran for seven weeks, featuring a solo performance by a comedian or cabaret artist every Thursday. Besides Priol, other comedians like Rüdiger Hoffmann, Bodo Bach, Bülent Ceylan, Eckart von Hirschhausen, Ole Lehmann, and Ingo Oschmann were also presented. On December 3, 2006, Priol was one of the guests on "Menschen 2006," a year-end review show hosted by Johannes B. Kerner. Priol presented a satirical review of the year. On January 20, 2007, he appeared on the ZDF show "Wetten, dass..?" (Bet it..?). For almost seven years, Priol hosted the political cabaret show "Neues aus der Anstalt" on ZDF, from January 2007 to June 2013, initially with Georg Schramm and later, after Schramm's departure, with Frank-Markus Barwasser alias Erwin Pelzig. The setting of the show resembled the foyer of a psychiatric clinic, with Priol playing the role of the clinic's director. On June 26, 2013, Priol and Barwasser announced their departure from the show, and the last episode in the original cast aired on October 1, 2013. Since February 4, 2014, a successor show titled "Die Anstalt" has been running with Max Uthoff and Claus von Wagner. From September to December 2014, Priol appeared alongside Emmanuel Peterfalvi ("Alfons") in the short-lived ZDF show "Ein Fall fürs All" (A Case for Space). Since 2002, Priol has presented the satirical year-end review "TILT!" as a touring program every December. The show is also broadcast on television, with the approximately three-hour stage version being shortened to one to two hours. Until 2010, the program was aired by Bayerischer Rundfunk, and since 2011, it has been broadcast by ZDF. The stage versions were also released on DVD until 2013. Together with Georg Schramm, he participated in the 50th demonstration against Stuttgart 21 on October 25, 2010. Alongside Frank-Markus Barwasser, Georg Schramm, and Jochen Malmsheimer, he appeared in the 30th episode of "Die Anstalt" on October 17, 2017. On November 5, 2017, Priol appeared on the show "Missverstehen Sie mich richtig!" hosted by Gregor Gysi, where he shared stories from his life.
