About Troy Anthony
Artist Name: Troy Anthony Birth Name: Troy Anthony Desilva Birth Place and Date: Bermuda, October 16, 1974 Official Bio Troy Anthony was born in the little island of Bermuda where his love for reggae music began to develop at the age of ten. He started out around the house listening to old greats like Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Third World, and many others. When asked why reggae stood out to him, he replied, "reggae is the only music that I could relate to that reflects my island roots, and in my opinion, the only music that has such powerful heartfelt messages to complement the rough but sweet sound." At the age of eighteen, his love for singing began to grow as he would practice often, experimenting with different vocal ranges and styles. At the age of 21, Troy Anthony had an experience that would change his life forever. On the night of his twenty-first birthday, he and some friends were in a terrible car crash that would claim the life of a close friend who was also celebrating his birthday that night. This tragic event pushed the ambitious singer to start writing songs expressing his inner thoughts with conscious lyrics. He went a step further and began recording and getting air play on the local stations and was approached by the island's top promoter who asked him to open a few shows featuring artist like Luciano, Morgan Heritage, Sizzla, Anthony B., and Mikey General to name a few. This experience inspired him and he knew it was his place to be a reggae artist. But still trying to cope with the death of his friend the singer began seeking answers to questions that only God could solve. In January of 1999, his questions were answered in a little church on the same street that claimed his friend's life. Now a Christian husband and father of two, he is today more determined than ever to bring to the people good music with a strong message of encouragement, truth, love, and enlightenment. He has recently released a new single with reggae superstar, Gyptian, and is currently working out of Sly and Robby studios, as well as Stone Love Studios. Exclusive Interview with GospelReggae.com GR: How did you begin doing music? Troy Anthony: well my father played in a band and so as a little boy I would listen to him practice and sing along GR: Tell me, how did your name come about? Any obstacles with it--funny mispronunciations, etc...? Troy Anthony: I met a well know reggae artist by the name of White Mice, he liked the vibes and so he asked what my stage name was and I told him I didn't have one so when I told him my name he said "yeah just use troy ya know" so I thought ok that sounds too simple so after I became saved I added my middle name and after saying it over a few times it sounded like it was destiny. GR: If you could share the stage with any Christian or secular artist in the world (living or dead) who would it be? Troy Anthony: Bob Marley GR: I know that you have written a whole heap of songs in the past, but what's your favorite one? Now, if that is too hard for you to answer, then tell me this; if you spent 5 minutes with an avid reggae fan and only had enough time to play them one of your songs, which one would you play them? Troy Anthony: I would have to play the tune with Gyptian sometimes. GR: Is there any song that you wrote in the past that you are embarrassed about? Anything that you wish you could make disappear? Troy Anthony: yes I use to chat so I wrote a few slack tunes in the past that I am not proud of. GR: What were the last 5 CDs that you put in your disc changer? Troy Anthony: some new riddims from studios overseas GR: What's your favorite verse in the Bible and why? Troy Anthony: proverbs 3:5-8 because to me it just doesn't get any more simple than that GR: What Bible character do you most identify yourself with? Troy Anthony: David GR: What do you have to say about (or to) artists that started off in the Christian industry (CBA) doing gospel music and now sing secular (mainstream) with a watered down, or ambiguous message? Troy Anthony: I would say to such an artist, it’s time to take a good look within and see how you measure up with the example of Christ and if Christ is truly within your heart then change will begin GR: As Christians, God is of course our true inspiration, but beyond the generic response of "Jesus," what are your muses in your life (for lack of a better word)? For example, what are the people, places, or things that trigger a fresh musical idea and ultimately a new song for you? Troy Anthony: well just peoples lives in general, my own life experiences and watching the news, those kind of things GR: What country would you tour (even if you didn't get paid to perfom)? Troy Anthony: I would love to tour the Uk GR: Why do you do music? What is your primary goal? Troy Anthony: I do it because I simply love it and my primary goal is to help trigger that part of people that causes them to realize that God is really what we need to be a complete people. GR: Are you working on any future projects/releases that we should look out for? Troy Anthony: Yeah, I am in the beginning of recording some new singles and some new combos with some of the popular names in the reggae industry. I will be recording a video with Gyptian as well as a debut video with St. Matthew to name a few. Ministry "My goal as a gospel reggae artist is to be passionate about reaching the lost for Jesus Christ. I take pleasure in fueling the radical people of God to be free to express what God has invested in them. I am a firm believer in the Holy Spirit and humbly depend on the Word and anointing of God to accomplish my mission."-Troy Anthony
