About Third Light

Third Light is a British pop-rock band. Formed in 2005, Third Light make, to use a term coined by a London promoter, "pop-tinged post-rock". Frontman and chief songwriter David Wallis is a guitarist and piano player, and has been writing songs since he was old enough to lift an instrument. Lead guitarist and the band's producer, Mike Payne, is a multi-instrumentalist and sound specialist. Payne is single-handedly responsible for Third Light's stylised, soaring, effects-laden guitar noise, as well as the composer of several of the band's instrumental tracks; he also engineers, records, and produces all the band's work. Bassist Martin Bell contributes lyrics and structure to Wallis' songs as required, and ensures that Third Light music is driving and dynamic in the bottom-end sound. Drummer Richard Stillman is a classically-trained musician, and contributes melody and structure, as well as powerful drum parts, to the music. In 2006, one of the band's tracks, "Gone Too Long", was used on a Barclays Premier League advert that aired on BBC World and again in early 2007, for the launch of the Popworld Pulp magazine and television show. They recorded their first EP, Iodine, in July 2007. In 2009 they released their first single, "Leaders and Followers", and later that year a brand new instrumental track entitled "When Are You Gonna Give Yourself a Chance?" was used on an Aston Martin promotional film. Third Light's first album, Built by Machines, was released in 2010. The title "Built by Machines" is a reference to the recording process, which is entirely digital, entirely engineered, produced, and mixed by Mike Payne, and released by the band. Underlining the band's first five years of existence and productivity, Built by Machines brings together old favourites and new material in a freshly-recorded collection for the first time. Anthemic lead singles from the album, "Time to Shine" and "You’ve Got It All to Lose", were released in 2010 as a double A-side.
