About Theatre Royal
There are at least two artists called Theatre Royal: a music group and a syndicated British radio anthology series originally broadcast in the 1950s. 1. Medway's Theatre Royal were formed in 2009 after a day spent breaking into a derelict Victorian theatre in Chatham, UK with Billy Childish and Lupen Crook. They recorded and released 2 albums 'from rubble rises' and 'At The End Of A River, The Sea..' and the 'Spit and a Dream' EP on Rochester based label l The Preservation Society Presents www.thepreservationsocietypresents.com. Their songs range from hurtling Garage clatter through to straight up Pop, taking in Alt Country, Psychedelic West Coast Pop and Punk/New Wave along the way. According to Artrocker Magazine the music of Theatre Royal 'heads straight for the melodic jugular'. Influences include classic British bands such as The Smiths, Echo and The Bunnymen and The Beatles to iconic American groups such as The Velvet Undergound and Buffalo Springfield. Modern comparisons have been drawn to The National, Doves and even The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The British anthology series, Theatre Royal, featured plays based on literature, films and English theatre. Produced in two series, Sir Lawrence Olivier and Sir Ralph Richardson served as hosts and narrators, and on many occasions portrayed the leading roles. Originally broadcast and syndicated in the 1950s, the series remained in syndication in the US into the 1970s.
