About THE SPELLBOUND

THE SPELLBOUND (ザ スペルバウンド) is a Japanese electro-rock/synth pop duo from Tokyo which was formed in 2020. Members: ** Bass, synth & programming: 中野雅之 (Masayuki Nakano; BOOM BOOM SATELLITES) ** Vocals & Guitar: 小林祐介 (Yusuke Kobayashi; THE NOVEMBERS) ** Support Drums: 福田洋子 (Yoko Fukuda) ** Support Drums: 大井一彌 (Kazuya Ooi) History: The band was formed by Masayuki Nakano of BOOM BOOM SATELLITES and Yusuke Kobayashi of THE NOVEMBERS on December 15th 2020. On April 20, 2019 , four years after the death of BOOM BOOM SATELLITES vocalist Michiyuki Kawashima, Masayuki Nakano posted a call for a new band vocalist on his social media account. Together with Yusuke Kobayashi of THE NOVEMBERS , who was the first to apply, the band was formed on December 15, 2020 , and began activities on January 13, 2021. They began releasing new music in January 2021, starting with the digital single “Hajimari” and continuing with monthly releases for five months. The video was choreographed by Tomohiko Tsujimoto and built as a collaboration with a group of dancers. Movement and music were woven together with a kind of precision that made the project immediately recognizable. By the end of May they released FLOWER, the fifth single in a run of monthly releases that had lasted five months. All the videos from the debut single to this one were directed by Kensaku Kakimoto, with Tsujimoto and Koharu Sugawara appearing as dancers. The visual identity of the band settled early: sharp, expressive, physical. Their first solo show took place on July 8 at Ebisu LIQUIDROOM under the title THE SECOND CHAPTER. A little more than a month later they appeared at Fuji Rock Festival 2021 on August 21, closing the second day at the Red Marquee stage. That set cemented their presence as a live act. On December 18 they returned for a second solo show at Shin Kiba USEN STUDIO COAST, titled A DEDICATED CHAPTER TO STUDIO COAST AND YOU. The date happened to be Kobayashi’s birthday, and the venue carried its own weight. It was the same hall where Nakano had performed the final BOOM BOOM SATELLITES show in 2017. Their first full album, simply titled THE SPELLBOUND, came out on February 23 in 2022 through Nakano Music. It was Nakano’s first self-produced release, an important step for him and for the project. Three days later they played a release show at Spotify O-EAST. In July they set off on their first tour, THE SPELLBOUND TOUR 2022, a short run of four solo concerts from July 3 to 20. The year closed with another milestone. On November 2 they released their first single with NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan. The title was Subete ga Soko ni Arimasu You ni, used as the ending theme for the fourth season of the television anime Golden Kamuy. The band is named after the song title on BOOM BOOM SATELLITES' seventh album, "TO THE LOVELESS" (released May 26, 2010 , the ninth track on the album). At live shows, they sometimes perform arrangements of songs by BOOM BOOM SATELLITES and THE NOVEMBERS . About the members: Masayuki Nakano debuted in 1997 on the Belgian label R&S. Together with Michiyuki Kawashima, he worked as BOOM BOOM SATELLITES, gaining international attention with music featured in films such as "The Dark Knight" and "Yamakasi". The project came to an end with the 2016 release “LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME” after Kawashima died of a brain tumor on October 9 , 2016, at the age of 47. Nakano has also been active as a producer. He was born in Kanagawa Prefecture and he is the first Japanese to be certified as a mastering engineer by "Mastered for iTunes". Yusuke Kobayashi is the frontman and songwriter of the alternative rock band THE NOVEMBERS, formed in 2005. He was born in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture and produced songs for Chara. He also was a support guitarist for Yukihiro (L'Arc~en~Ciel) . THE NOVEMBERS debuted in 2007 with the EP “THE NOVEMBERS” on UK PROJECT. In 2013 he launched the label MERZ and has continued to release music and perform steadily. Yoko Fukuda has been the support drummer for BOOM BOOM SATELLITES since 2009 and continued his activities in THE SPELLBOUND. Kazuya Ooi has been a support drummer since their first solo live show. Currently a member of DATS and yahyel. https://the-spellbound.com https://x.com/THESPELLBOUNDjp https://x.com/BBS_nakano https://instagram.com/THESPELLBOUNDjp https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpoY1Npu-HYlV2fZr5ZPr4A
