About The Matchstick Architects

The Matchstick Architects are a New England based indie rock band coming together from the various sectors of the Northeast. The band puts forth a soulful blend of country, blues, folk, jazz, and Americana, influenced from an eclectic mix of artists ranging from songstresses such as Lucinda Williams and Aimee Mann to purveyors of the American indie scene such as The Decemberists. The band is fronted by Dar Maloney (Pleasant Valley, NY) on guitar and lead vocals. Her hard driving vocal style is often compared to that of Melissa Etheridge – and although she clearly has her own style, it’s something she takes as a true compliment. The band also features Tom Conklin (Pittsfield, MA) on lead guitar. His tasteful guitar playing dances harmoniously with Dar’s soulful and powerful voice. DiDi Davis (Barkhamsted, CT) brings the boom as she cleverly works her way up and down the neck of her six string Bubinga forged bass – often switching it out for a five-string fretless instrument. The band is rounded out by the well-oiled and waxed tempo captain, Dave Willey (Becket, MA) on the drums. The Matchstick Architects play in and around New England and beyond in support of their debut CD entitled... All That's In Between. The band is looking forward to recording its second CD, which promises to be a worthy follow-up to their debut effort. For those wishing to dig a little deeper… Dar Maloney and Tom Conklin formed The Matchstick Architects as a duo in 2010. With the idea of adding bandmates always a persistent desire, they played small venues and festivals for a couple of years and continued to write songs. Bassist DiDi Davis came along shortly thereafter. That was a stroke of luck. She was the perfect fit and she added the pulsating low end that they were desperately missing. From there, a search for the right drummer began. That search would prove to be a challenge. After going through several drummers that didn’t work out for one reason or another, they found Paul Unsworth. Paul was the final piece to finishing the band’s debut album, All That’s In Between. Paul played drums on all the album tracks except for one, the soulful blues rocker, Ready. Band friend and Arlo Guthrie drummer, Terry A La Berry, had already laid down the drum tracks for that one. The first single off the debut album, Little Things, enjoyed a steady rotation on The Exit 97.7 WEXT, a radio station based in Troy, NY which serves the greater Capital District of Albany, NY. The song also came in at #12 on the radio station's Top 60 Local 518 Songs of 2016. Here is what morning drive personality, Dave Michaels, had to say about the debut effort… “Tom Conklin’s rousing guitar playing mixes delightfully with the honey voice of Dar Maloney on The Matchstick Architect’s debut album, “All That’s In Between”. The band, rounded out by bassist DiDi Davis and drummer Paul Unsworth, stomp through nine songs; delivering a good mixture of moods on the album, from the slick pop-like song The Moment to the slowing burning rocker Ready. A promising debut.” Paul Unsworth relocated his family and had to leave the band in 2015, once again leaving a hole in the line-up that has been hard to keep filled. That’s is where Dave Willey entered the picture. A friend of the band suggested that the band try him out. They did, and the magic was back. Dave has been the band’s, steady drummer, ever since.
