Emphasizing electric blues but quick to detour into rock, Southern soul and funk, the 11-member Blowin' Smoke Rhythm & Blues Band is the type of outfit you'd expect to find in Chicago in the 1990s but actually came out of Los Angeles. It was in L.A. that the band, led by singer/bassist and St. Louis native Larry "Fuzzy" Knight, recorded this live club date. The music is derivative but spirited and thoroughly enjoyable, and Knight's band brings plenty of enthusiasm to material ranging from Willie Dixon's "Built for Comfort," Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You," and Tommy Tate's "Get Your Money Where You Spend Your Time" to the Temptations' "Shakey Ground," and the 1960s frat rock favorite "Bony Moronie." The lead vocals are handled by Knight and the gritty Count Yates as well as three big-voiced female singers called the Fabulous Smokettes: Christina Vierra, Terri Brinegar, and Carolyn Basley. Vierra and Brinegar both bring a strong Janis Joplin influence to their performances, while New Orleans native Basley has more of a Crescent City soul/blues orientation. Beyond the Blues Horizon is a CD that blues, rock, and R&B enthusiasts should take note of. ~ Alex Henderson High-life R&B pours from this new release by one of California's premier Blues/R&B bands. Recorded "live" at B.B. King's Blues Club in Los Angeles, you'll find 14 tracks from the heyday of the big band blues sound. This is the real thing - a true, authentic, classic R&B Revue and great American rockin' blues from a killer group of musicians and singers! Led by bassist/singer Larry "Fuzzy" Knight, Blowin' Smoke is an 11-piece band that blends classic Blues and R&B songs and originals in a non-stop barrage of very danceable and listenable music & entertainment! Blowin' Smoke is a band that performs the kinds of songs everybody enjoys. Featuring expressive vocals and a tight horn section, this band would set any room rockin' on its heels. Using five different lead vocalists: Larry "Fuzzy" Knight, The "COUNT" Yates and The Fabulous SMOKETTES -Carolyn Basley, Terri Brinegar & Christina Vierra - gives the band a not-often-heard vocal quality that's hard to match. When you combine the 4-piece Horn section and the 4-piece rhythm section with the vocals, the band creates a complexity in sound that puts it in the upper echelon of today's best R&B show bands. This CD, "Beyond The BLUES Horizon" has been highly recommended by Blues Revue, Living Blues and Blues Access Magazines. Full performer name: Blowin' Smoke Rhythm & Blues Band.
