About Tantroniq

Tantroniq is the moniker of Tanya Thielke, an avante garde composer turned sound artist through an unlikely evolution of career changes and synthesis of influences. With a firm rooting in the classical tradition- beginning as a youngster on the violin and eventually as an academically trained composer with distinguishing awards - both her early discovery of Kraftwerk and her experiments with tape recorders at around age 12 were a harbinger of things to come. “I heard Kraftwerk’s Computer World album which I picked up on cassette at a record store, and I couldn’t believe my ears. The idea of music being combined with a computer, which I at the time had really only heard about, blew my mind. It seemed like a faraway fantastical world to me-a place I wanted to go someday”. Obsessively creating and collecting natural and manufactured sounds and manipulating them in unorthodox ways laid the foundation of an entirely new sound palette. Distilled with influences ranging from her own classical modernist training and theatrical performance works to Laibach’s Das Kapital, Tom Wait’s Bone Machine and various albums by Hip Hop legends Wu-Tang Clan, Mantra Machine was released in early 2006. Not just a collection of tracks but a sonic experience in the venerated tradition of the LP album, Mantra Machine received significant college and independent radio airplay and accolades from RPM directors, despite being from an unknown artist with no label backing. “This music was such a radical departure from all I had done before. I completely redirected my creativity, down to choosing my new name. I had faith in the music, but of course my radio launch was my first real world test of this new sound. My hope was that what had been in my head all these years would move others in some way. And it did.”
