Australia's first all girl heavy rock/metal band, formed in Melbourne in 1977. Original lineup: Cris Bonacci (Lead guitar)1977-1983 Chris Scheri (Flute and lead Vocals)1977-1983 Sally Zylstra (Bass) 1977-1980 Robyn Clark (Drums)1977-1979 Subsequent members were Johnno Zaffarese (Drums) 1980, Brendan O'Shea (Bass and backing vocals)1980-1983, Fab Versace (Drums and Vocals)1981 and Billy George (Drums and backing vocals) 1982-1983. As an all girl band, Sweet Jayne won the Australasian Yamaha Battle of the Bands in 1978. With various lineups, Cris Bonacci and Chris Scheri played over 700 gigs from 1977 to 1983. They began with covers of Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Heart, Jethro Tull, Bad Company and Joe Walsh but they specialized in original material. Sweet Jayne songs were written by Chris Scheri and arranged for the band with Cris Bonacci, or based around Cris Bonacci's guitar riffs. Over 6 years Sweet Jayne had a substantial following of fans around the live circuit, especially in Victoria. Recordings engineered by Mark Moffat at Channel 9 TCS Studios were released on cassette,1978; the all girl lineup featured in a film by Film Victoria, called "Changes" for which they wrote and performed the music,1979: they released an independent 5 track vinyl E.P ,1980, a limited edition 3 track cassette E.P.,recorded at Richmond Recorders by Chris Thompson,1981 and a single "Icarus" b/w "State of Mind" on the Cleopatra label, released by Musicland accompanied by a video, filmed in 1982. Sweet Jayne split up in 1983 after Mike Oldfield came to one of their shows during a Sydney tour and offered airfares to the U.K. for Chris Scheri and Cris Bonacci to work with him as flute player and guitarist.
