About Surface To Air
Surface! To Air are a frenetic British alternative rock band from the Dagenham and Romford suburbs of East London/Essex. Their mix of heavy punk rock hooks with edgy pop melodies is also surprisingly rooted in early blues and in Montreal orchestral rock. The band features Billy Jones (Vocals, guitar) Aidan Maloney (Bass, Vocals) Danny Williams (Guitar) Paul Abbott (Guitar) and War-B (Drums, Vocals). The name "Surface! To Air" refers to the concept of relief and euphoria from escaping drowning or asphyxiation, literally the first intake of breath as survivors surface back to air and affirm their conviction to be alive. The band draw parallels from this experience to live concerts where audiences create their own physical dynamic, and often bring about a shared camaraderie of survival and enjoyment after a sometimes brutal deluge of physical expression. Chaotic live performances and a bag full of "new delicious tunes that swing from Queens of the Stone Age to We Are Scientists" have been inducing fans to dance and jump with wanton abandon, and in the next second spellbound by eerie quieter moments of vulnerability and menace. Though well grounded in their humble beginnings, according to the band's bassist Aidan Maloney and frontman Billy Jones, the group "just want to write vicious melodic rock and roll hooks and play music that we love to everyone, we don't care if people think we're a bunch of urchins from somewhere dodgy, they can still associate with the tunes and lyrics" Euphoric, emotional and slightly deranged, some see Surface! To Air as one of the new best pleasures of rock n roll.
