About Stern Combo Meißen
Stern Meißen (formerly Stern Combo Meißen or Stern Combo Meissen) is a German rock band founded in 1964 in Meißen, East Germany. The original lineup included Martin Schreier, Norbert Jäger, and Bernd Fiedler, and the band initially performed covers of songs by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Kinks. In the early 1970s, Thomas Kurzhals (keyboard) and Reinard Fißler (vocals) joined, forming what is regarded as the classic lineup. In 1975, the band appeared in a scene of the film "Hostess", performing alongside Nina Hagen. After the arrival of keyboardist Lothar Kramer, Stern Combo Meißen released their self-titled debut album in 1977 through AMIGA, the label for their studio albums throughout the late 1970s and 1980s. During this period, the band moved toward art rock, releasing the concept albums "Weißes Gold" (1978) and "Reise zum Mittelpunkt des Menschen" (1980). In the same year, the band shortened its name to Stern Meißen. Following this, the group adopted a more pop-oriented direction, particularly after IC Falkenberg joined as vocalist in 1983, replacing Fißler. Schreier remained the only founding member in the band at that time. Stern Meißen gained popularity in East Germany with this change in musical style. The group released two more albums before disbanding in 1989. The 1986–1989 lineup reunited for a tour in 1993 with Fißler participating. In 1996, the 1979 lineup (without Kramer) reunited under the name Stern Combo Meißen and performed into the early 2000s. Fißler, who had been diagnosed with ALS, left the group in 2005 after releasing a solo album. Falkenberg returned for guest performances from 2004 to 2008. In mid-2008, Schreier reformed the band with Kurzhals, former drummer Frank Schirmer, and singer Michael "Larry" Brödel (Larry B.), who had performed with the DDR band Karussell. In 2011, the band released "Lebensuhr" (Clock of Life), their first album in 24 years, featuring a guest contribution by Fißler, who died from ALS in 2016. Founding member Norbert Jäger left the band prior to the album and died in 2017. Larry B. left the group in 2012 and was replaced by singer and keyboardist Manuel Schmid, while Sebastian Düwelt joined as keyboardist. Thomas Kurzhals remained with the band until his death in January 2014. In 2018, the group released the single "Nimm die Welt in die Hand" (Take the World In Your Hands). In 2019, to celebrate their 55th anniversary, the band performed with special guests, including former vocalist Viktoria Fischer and former keyboardist Andreas Bicking. With the release of their album "Freiheit ist" (Freedom is), the band returned to the name Stern Meißen. The group continues to be recognized as one of the most prominent rock bands from East Germany.
