About Southfork
Southfork was formed in late 1997 during jam sessions between friends Gunnar Lööf and Sebastian Sippola. At the time they were sharing the same rehearsal studio, but played in different bands. The project was initially called Bulldozer and the first songs that came out of this collaboration were Man Made of Stone and Space Revolution. Soon bass player Anders Fästader joined the line-up and the group took its present name. Shortly thereafter, Henrik Bergqvist was brought in on lead guitar and the line-up was complete. In the summer of 1998, Southfork signed with Black Mark Productions who thought that the demos the band had recorded, were of such quality that they only needed mixing. The renowned duo of Niklas Flyckt and Göran Elmquist at Kabang studio were engaged to mix the tapes in order to complete the band’s debut album. The Southfork S/T album was released in August 1999. The reviews following the release were very positive and several of the biggest rock magazines in Europe and Asia praised the album with follow-up interviews and articles, which in turn led to the album getting airtime at various radio stations. Southfork played the local scene in Stockholm during 1998 and 1999, supporting bigger acts as well as doing their own shows. As circumstances would have it, the band never toured outside of Sweden, although there were no shortage of offers. In the fall of 1999, the band started writing and recording demos for the follow-up album. What was to become Straight Ahead was recorded and mixed in beginning of 2000 at Sun Light Studio by legendary producer and engineer Tomas Skogsberg. For this session a new bass player, Thomas Thorberg, joined the band and replaced Anders Fästader. The release of the album was planned for late spring of 2000 alongside with touring of Germany and neighboring countries. Unfortunately, the release date was postponed several times, which ultimately led to the band losing both inspiration and creative progress. When Straight Ahead finally was released in the fall of 2001, Southfork had more or less gone into hiatus. In the years following 2002, when the band ended their partnership with Black Mark Productions, some of the band members started new projects or joined with other bands and artists such as Plankton and Grand Magus. There were however several occasions during the years leading up to 2007 when the members came together to write and record new material. Some of the songs resulting from these sessions can be heard on the In Brackets album, released in February 2018. In 2013, Gunnar Lööf and Sebastian Sippola started the recording of Southfork’s third album, Through a Dark Lens, by laying down the drum tracks in a rehearsal room at Fryshuset, next door to where it all began in 1997. It would, however, take nearly five years to complete the album. During that time, original bass player Anders Fästader rejoined the band with the intention to track the bass for the album. However, geographical and temporal constraints associated with the life of middle-aged men, dictated that Anders would not be a part of this effort. Fans of Southfork will no doubt hear Anders on future recordings when the timing is better and the stellar constellations of the zodiac approves. In 2016, Southfork began to rehearse again for the first time in nearly 15 years. Peter Kahm, a long-time friend of the members, agreed to take on Anders’ role as bass player in the band. As rehearsals began, the band found new energy and it was decided to make an effort to finish the recordings from 2013. After recording guitar solos and lead vocals in the fall of 2017, the band mixed the album in the basement of Gunnar’s house. After another round of mastering by Claes Persson at CRP, Through a Dark Lens was finally released just before Christmas 2017. Alongside the release of In Brackets in early 2018, the band’s intention is to put out a follow-up to Through a Dark Lens later in the same year.
