About Smart Set

The Smart Set is a new Electronica/Pop group from producer and guitarist Rick Torres (of Supreme Beings of Leisure and Bitter:Sweet). The Smart Set's music draws upon such diverse influences as Roots/Dub, Breakbeat Electronica, Northern Soul, California Soul, Exotica Lounge, Blues, Country, Trip Hop, Rock and Folk. Their music has a dreamy, intoxicating quality that brings to mind groups like Massive Attack, Portishead and Zero 7, while the lyrics and melodies may evoke comparisons to Dusty Springfield and Joni Mitchell. Not strictly downtempo, The Smart Set endeavors to bring a wide range of musical moods and surprises to the stage with accomplished musicianship and finesse. "With the combined talents and experience of this five-piece LA electronic/pop group, The Smart Set couldn’t be a more fitting name.""There's a genuine sweetness and beauty to their music—it's heartfelt, playful, wistful, but never clichéd. " -Aylin Zafar, URB Magazine http://www.urb.com/promotions/next1000/profiles/1651-The+Smart+Set.ph http://www.reverbnation.com/thesmartsetband The Smart Set were also a four piece band active between June 2007 and November 2008, during which time they played often exciting, occasionally confrontational and variously received shows throughout London. In Autumn of 2008 Danny Blight quit the band and remaining members called an end to the project. Some Smart Set material was later recorded by Kleinzeit, a key band in the art rock scene centered around The Combination of Studio. www.kleinzeit.com www.thecombinationof.com
